“But you can’t get upset because you have your fair share of women throwing themselves at you.”
“No, I don’t. I told you about the girls on the cruise, remember?”
“I wasn’t talking about them.”
“Then I’m sorry to say, Honeycomb, but no one else is interested in me.”
“I think Whit Marlow might beg to differ.” I try to make it sound like I’m teasing him, and it’s not that big of a deal, when in reality I’m sitting here on bated breath, waiting for the answer. “The two of you looked pretty cozy on that clock tower.”
“You saw the campaign?”
“Yeah, you guys look really good together. She’s stunning.”
“So are you,” he adds, not even a beat after. “And I’m not interested in her.”
“Y-you’re not?”
“Nope. She did give me her number, but I gave her Dax’s instead.”
“You gave her Dax’s number?” I go still, trying to process how that makes me feel.
He’s still waiting for me.
“I’ve been hooked onyourhoneycomb since high school. Has that not already been established?”
It’s not too late.
I let out a breathy laugh as I look at the ceiling.
“Honey,” he drawls out teasingly. “Were you jealous?”
“Yes,” I answer simply. I’ve always wanted Zach, I’m just finally ready and comfortable enough in who I am to admit. “I was jealous.”
The phone goes quiet for a second, and I can just imagine the smirk pulling on his face. He knows with every call and every day that passes that I’m inching my way toward coming back to him.
“Good,” he says with a sense of finality. “I like to hear that.”
“You sound very pleased with yourself for someone who got jealous over Professor McFineAsHell fifteen minutes ago.”
“You’re right. I have nothing to be jealous of. You’re mine.”
I know.
“Are you watching my game tomorrow night? It’s a big one. Last home game of the season and first time we’re playing with Coach Smith as our interim head coach.”
“Wait, what?”
“Didn’t you see the news?”
“No?”
“Oh, Honeycomb. Did you turn off all notifications about me after you saw the pictures of me with Whit?”
“Uh.” I can’t say no because that would be a lie.
“That’s a yes,” he answers with a chuckle. “I think I like this jealous Honey.”
“Don’t get used to it. What happened?”
