Kelsey groaned, throwing her arm across her eyes. If she could get Julian to cover her at the bar, she wouldn’t have to be there at all. That was the only reason she was in this predicament. Because she’d be at the bar working. But she didn’t want to be the only one not in costume. Maybe Garrett had been right in encouraging her, maybe a sexy witch wasn’t such a bad idea.

“Fine. We’ll keep looking.” Isabella shuffled through more clothing in the closet.

“How about I just pick something and make up a costume?”

Isabella ignored her.

“Ah-ha. I got it,” Izzy said.

Kelsey sat up and leaned back on her elbows.

Isabella held out a pastel blue suit.

Kelsey had worn the suit only once. Davis had a matching one in orange. The two had competed in a costume competition years ago. Dressed in Harry and Lloyd costumes from their favorite movieDumb and Dumber, they’d won first place.

It was so long ago it felt like a lifetime. Or like someone else’s life.

Before kids. Before Ricky. Before life had become so complicated.

Kelsey pursed her lips, surprised she was seriously considering it.

“Dumb and Dumber, right?” Izzy asked.

“Yep.”

“It’s perfect. It’s part of a couple costume, but you don’t have to necessarily have the other guy to complete the costume.”

“Lloyd,” Kelsey amended.

“It’s so iconic, everyone knows him.”

“I suppose.” Kelsey stood and searched in the back of the closet for a step stool. Locating it, she set it up and climbed it to rummage around on the top shelf of her closet. Finally, she found what she was looking for. A pastel blue top hat.

Isabella’s eyes widened and she snatched it from Kelsey. “Ahh, this is too perfect.” She set the hat on her head, admiring herself in the full-length mirror and then snorted a laugh at her reflection.

“Give it here.” Kelsey held out her hand. “You could never pull off this look. It’s too nerdy.”

Izzy gasped. “I can be nerdy.”

“Oh, honey, you couldn’t even if you tried.” Kelsey smiled, setting the hat on her own head, and presenting herself to Isabella, a smile stretching across her face.

“And somehow, you’re right. You can totally pull off the look. And still be completely adorable.”

“Ha,” Kelsey scoffed, slipping the hat off and pushing her fingers through her hair. She reached for a bin in the back of her closet. “I think I might even have a blonde wig in here somewhere.”

“Here’s a thought—why don’t you ask Davis if he still has his Lloyd costume and would want to do a couple costume with you?”

Kelsey whipped her head up. “Wh-what? What for? Why would we go as a couple?”

Isabella blinked at her.

Kelsey’s cheeks burned. “I just mean, I’m sure he doesn’t still have it.”

“Okay, weirdo, what’s with you?”

Was she being weird?

“What? Nothing. It’s just that, I’m sure he’s already going with someone. Everyone’s had their costumes planned for weeks. You know how Davis is.”
