That hung there.
“What if he’s somehow involved?”
Gene laughed.
“Well, then, I guess we’ll figure that out when I’m skinned and don’t make it to the hospital.”
He’d meant it to be a joke.
Only, Ethan’s lower lip was quivering.
Oh, shit.
The problem with Gene was he used inappropriate humor when he was stressed the fuck out.
At that moment, he was that times ten.
So, he warned him again.
“EJ, we’re being watched, and if we get outed, we’re definitely done as partners. Gabe said he’d let us as long as we solved shit and didn’t flaunt it. Fight for us.”
That snapped him out of it.
“Okay. I’m good,” he whispered. “We’re good.”
Thank God.
“I love you, Baby,” Gene whispered.
Ethan touched his arm, the un-casted one, connecting them even more.
“I love you too.”
Well, now, he needed to get shit done.
Gene waved his casted arm and got the detective’s attention.
When the man approached, he clued him in.
“I’m going to walk my partner back to the café to get his things so he can head to the hotel, and then I need a ride to the hospital. You free?”
The man was more than happy to help.
That was why he was sticking around. This was a mess, and the two Feds were going to need help.
“No problem. Let me clear it with the cops so you can leave the scene. I already had dispatch tag it as an FBI scene, so if you have a team who can handle this, get them here. Oh, and not one of the media guys was filming at the time of the shooting. They admitted that they were watching you, though.”
No shock there.
When Gene found out who released the dogs on them, he was throat punching them. This slowed down their investigation.
Dannie continued.
“The cops are trying to find some cameras, but this is a low-crime area. So far, nada.”
As for this place being low crime, that was until they rolled into town, apparently.
Gene hoped the local law could hold the scene for a while.
