“Dannie said the dude likes to yap. He likely didn’t do it maliciously. You know how people are when they are trying to save their jobs or are ambitious.”
Well, yeah, he did. That was the other reason he was letting it go.
Now, though, Gene was curious.
“How did they find the body this time?” he asked. “Do we know?”
He nodded.
“A guy’s dog ran away, and he was out looking for him. Since his dog liked going to the park, he thought to look there, and that’s where he found a bump in the snow.”
Well, lucky them.
“When we get there,” Ethan began, “be careful. This killer is going to want to see how we react. I’m thinking we missed an opportunity to go to the memorial.”
Gene knew why he was saying that.
“You think he’s going back to the scene of the crime to watch us?”
He nodded.
“I know I would. I’d be curious as to what was going down that the media couldn’t show me. For the last half a day, we dodged them, and that means no update for the killer.”
That was alarming.
“Make sure you’re in Kevlar,” Gene said. “I just got me a husband, and I’m not losing him.”
Ethan smiled.
It was the most genuine smile Gene had ever seen from him. There was a lightness in it, and it made his heart happy. Ethan was at peace.
“You too, big guy. You got shot at once, so I’m sticking close, just in case.”
Well, he didn’t mind that.
While Gene wished he could sit there with Ethan in his lap a few more hours, they needed to get moving. When Ethan got up, he knew the update was over.
Now, he needed to get dressed.
Getting up, he was a little wobbly, and Ethan hoped that didn’t bite them in the ass.
“Maybe you should stay here,” he began, but didn’t get to finish.
Gene laughed.
And laughed.
And laughed.
“If you think for one minute that I’m staying here while you’re out there? Well, you’ve lost that gorgeous head of yours, EJ. I’m high, I’m not dead.”
Blackhawk was amused.
Well, that was the most Gene thing that he could say.
“I figured as much,” he said. “We just can’t have you walking like you’re drunk. That won’t play well in the media. This is going to be all over the news.”
Oh, Gene was aware.
