Hmm… the one that won’t back me into a corner.
“It’s a get together. You know how the girls are at Kappa Mu. To them, even four friends constitute calling it a party. Makes it sound more exciting than it is.”
Pressing his tongue to his cheek, he nods, but his forehead creases, showing he’s not ready to let this go. “When is it?”
“When is what?” I chirp and even throw in some batting of my eyelashes. Not that it does me any good.
A low growl rises in his throat. “Don’t play dumb.”
I exhale a loud breath. “I don’t know why you’re getting worked up about this. It’s the girls doing the shit they always do. No big deal and zero reason to get all snarly with me about it.”
A muscle pulses in his neck. “When?” he demands.
Urgh. Fine. “Later tonight. Happy now?”
His jaw ticks. That would be a no.
“You’re going?”
“I do live there,” I remind him with a shrug. “But I figure you’ll come over tonight, so I’ll be around until you show up. Quinn won’t let me out of it.” She knows about Mom and has given me space, but according to her, the time for space is over and I’m being dragged back into the fold.
“I’ll hang out for an hour or two at most before you come over.” I didn't invite him. Not that it matters. Dominique is Suncrest U’s quarterback. Formal invitation or not, he’s welcomed with open arms at every party or social gathering on campus.
Hell, the same rule probably applies to everything that goes on in Sun Valley. If not because of his position on the team, then because of his family name. There are perks to being a Price.
If Dominique wants to show up, he’ll show up. My feelings on the matter won’t stop him.
“I won’t be there.”
My shoulders dip in relief. “Great.”
Dominique responds to my comment with a dark scowl.Whoops.Could have kept that last statement to myself.
“Not just the party,” he adds, not missing a step. “I won’t be at your place tonight. Or this weekend.”
I stumble before catching myself.Oh.My shoulders droop for a different reason now. Whatever. It’s fine. I’ve seen him every day for weeks. We could use some space. I mean, yeah. Of course we could.
It’s never long before I reach the top of myTolerance for Dominiquemeter anyway, so this is perfect timing. If he leaves now, it’ll make it easier to deal with him later.
Forcing myself to smile through the disappointment I refuse to acknowledge right now, I force out a casual, “Busy?”
He nods. “I have a game in Richland tomorrow. Most of the team is heading out tonight and I’m driving Roman and Emilio.”
I knew he had a game coming up. I just didn’t know it was coming up this soon.
“Fun. I’m sure you guys will do great.”
“Thanks,” he grunts.
And cue the end of that conversation. I sigh. Dominique walks beside me the rest of the way home, though I’m not sure why. His car is probably back on campus near the football stadium so he’ll have to walk back and grab it before going home.
Ten minutes of silent walking later and we’ve reached the side entrance to Kappa Mu. “Well, this was fun.” I rock back on my feet. “Guess I’ll see you—“
“Tuesday.”
I lift both of my brows. “Tuesday?” I ask, not sure if I heard him right. Why wouldn’t I see him until Tuesday when he just said the game was on Saturday?
“A few things came up.”
