I roll my eyes. “That was one conversation I could’ve done without.”
“The whole family is weird,” she says.
“You don’t even want to know the garbage that came out of his mouth.”
“He’s trying to pimp––I mean, marry off––Rosaleigh?”
“So, I’m not the only one?”
“Pimp Devon is a running joke around town. I’m surprised he’s not flashing photos of Rosaleigh in her thong or teeny tiny bikini to make her that much more appealing.” April grimaces, her body shaking in disgust. “Mr. Devon is something else.”
My head jerks back. “You can’t be serious. He has photos of her in her underwear?”
She nods.
“Those people need a life.” I shake my head, equally disgusted. “Enough about the perverted old goat and his freak family.”
April laughs.
“What’s good?” I pull my eyes away from hers and to the blackboard over her head.
“Everything, but our star sandwich is the Spitfire Philly Cheesesteak.”
“Sounds dangerous.”
“You’re lucky you’re here early. They’re so good, the sandwiches fly out of here.”
“Really?” Now I’m intrigued. “Is it one of Riley’s creations?”
“It’s the brainchild of one of Riley’s new hires.”
“A local gal?”
April shakes her head. “Riley was a judge on a Food Networkcompetition show that wrapped up a few months back in LA. The winner works here now. She came up with the recipe. It’s a family recipe with a twist. The girl knows a thing or two about how to make a kick ass sandwich.”
“What does spitfire stand for?”
“Sharp cheese, a little pepperoncini peppers, and a dash of habanero. I’ve never had a Philly sandwich, but Miranda and Riley swear ours are better than the ones they’ve tasted in Philadelphia.”
“I’m sold. I’ll have two of them. I’m starved,” I say. “I might as well go for it, since next week it’ll be ranch food.”
“Don’t worry. Jake and Hunter take care of their workers,” she says. “They hire quality men and treat them like they matter. That’s why their crew is so loyal. According to Jenkins, the food’s pretty good. The new cooks Jake and Hunter hired alwaysprepare delicious recipes. Nothing as fancy as the food here, but according to my brother, still very satisfying.”
“Good to know.” I nod.
There’s a round of laughter coming from the kitchen.
I cock an eyebrow.
“Don’t mind them,” she says. “The new city girl is getting used to living down here. I should introduce you. I think she’s your type.”
I lift a hand. “I’m good. Mr. Devon did enough pimping for one day.”
Chapter 5
Rhett
Imarvel at the number of trucks zooming by me. Up to now, I never had a good reason to be on the road this early. One of the perks of having to get up at the same time as the roosters is watching the sun rise. It’s already shining bright above the treeline.
