Tammy’s heart beganbeating quickly. It was as if fate had led her here. Was it still available? If it was, could she afford it? She was literally down to her last few hundred pounds. She chewed on her bottom lip, deep in thought.
‘Penny for them?’
Ben placed two mugs down on the table.
Tammy pointed over to the sign. ‘It’s for rent Uncle Ben. Or at least I hope it still is.’
Ben slowly turned his head in the direction Tammy was pointing. ‘What am I looking at? I need my reading glasses.’
‘It says this café is up for rent Uncle Ben. Do you know anything about it?’
Ben looked thoughtful. ‘I don’t know that I do.’ He swivelled in his chair to look towards the counter. ‘Katherine!’
An elderly lady with a kind smile appeared from out the back and swept her head over the faces in the café, looking for the person who’d called her name. She stopped when Ben’s hand rose, motioning her over. ‘Ah, it’s you, Ben.’ She came from behind the counter and walked over to their table, smiling at Tammy when she reached it. ‘So, is this lovely young lady your great-niece, Ben?’
Tammy smiled as Ben nodded, his face beaming. ‘Yes, this is Tammy.’
Tammy did a little wave. ‘Hello. Katherine, it’s nice to meet you.’
‘It’s. lovely to meet you too, Tammy. You know. The only way I ever know it’s Ben’s birthday is when he tells me you’ve called.’
Tammy felt a wave of guilt. She only ever called him on his birthday. Why hadn’t she called him more often? He was probably lonely. Maybe she deserved what she got from Richi for being so selfish and wrapped up in her own little bubble.
She joined in with the playful ribbing directed at her uncle. ‘So he told you about my call yesterday, then?’
Katherine’s hands flew up to her cheeks. ‘No, he didn’t.’ She looked accusingly at Ben. ‘Why didn’t you tell me it was your birthday, Ben? I would have cooked you a full English breakfast—on the house no less.’
Ben brushed away her comment with a flick of his hand and a puff of his lips. ‘I wouldn’t let a young woman like yourself do that.’
Katherine roared with laughter. ‘Young woman? I bet there’s barely five years between us, Ben.’
Ben chuckled and crossed his arms. ‘Well, I’m not disclosing my age and I know a lady never tells hers, so let’s leave it at that.’
Katherine nodded. ‘Fair enough, but your next breakfast is on me and I’m not taking no for an answer.’
Tammy saw an opportune moment to ask about the sign. She pointed towards the corkboard. ‘Is the café still for rent, Katherine?’
Katherine pursed her lips together and wobbled her head. ‘Hmmm. I’m not sure my love. I had an enquiry a few weeks ago and the person I spoke to appeared to be very interested, but I haven’t heard anything back yet. I’m a little worried too, because I have to wrap things up here soon and move back to my hometown to care for my elderly mother. I really don’t want to close the place because I still need some income, and renting it was the best option.’ She smiled at Tammy. ‘Why love? Do you know anyone who is interested?’
Tammy matched Katherine’s smile. ‘Yes. Me.’
A man at the counter called out. ‘Service!’
Katherine looked back over her shoulder and tutted. ‘Tourists have no patience.’ She turned her attention back to Tammy. I’ll tell you what, I’ll find out his number and call him back. I need to know for certain anyway, and then we can get together for a chat if it’s still free, eh?’
Tammy nodded enthusiastically. ‘Wonderful. Also, would you like to join us this evening at The Cheese Wedge and Pickles, Katherine? We’re going for a drink.’
