The biggest difference, however, is Adelaide’s obsession with cars, motorbikes, and essentially anything with wheels and an engine bigger than 3.0 litres.

Miniature cars and motorbikes line the shelves, while built Lego versions of expensive sports cars sit throughout the room as decoration.

As I pass through the living area, my eyes land on the gun lying on the table beside several bullets.

I don’t even react anymore.

At some point, I grew used to the fact that my best friend is a future cartel leader.

“In here,” she calls, and I follow the sound of her voice into the bedroom where Adelaide lies on top of what looks like most of her wardrobe.

She just stares at the ceiling.

I can’t hide my amusement.

“Having trouble deciding?”

She lifts her head and narrows her eyes at me.

“What possibly gave it away?”

Then she falls back onto the pile of clothes with a sigh.

“We’re already running late, and I still have absolutely nothing to wear.”

I fold my arms.

“Late for what exactly?”

Adelaide pauses for a second before a slow smirk appears on her face.

“One of my men is fighting tonight, and I need to catch him before the fight starts.”

I stare at her for a moment.

“Fighting in what sense exactly?”

“You’ll see.”

I narrow my eyes slightly.

“Adelaide, you know those sorts of places are not really my scene.”

“You can stay upstairs in the office if it all becomes too much for you. Now help me choose something.”

I sigh.

“Fine. Show me what you’re considering.”

Adelaide immediately stands and pulls the oversized shirt over her head. I don’t ask who it belongs to, though it very clearly belongs to a man.

Underneath, she wears a matching black silk set.

“What about this?”

I hand her a pair of tailored trousers along with a dark red top.

She starts pulling it on before I stop her with a slight shake of my head.
