The gesture was so unexpected that Rosamund blinked. He lowered himself onto the carpet beside Clara with the careful, slightly stiff movements of a man whose joints no longer cooperated with spontaneity, and crossed his legs, and looked at the illustration Clara was pointing to with the expression of a man who had been given an audience he intended to earn.

“Read me this one,” Clara said. She did not ask. She commanded. It was her way with adults she had decided to accept, and the fact that she had extended the invitation at all meant something that Rosamund could not dismiss, however much Tristan’s silence from the hearth urged her to try.

Edwin read. His voice was measured—not theatrical, not performing, but attentive. He gave the fox a sly, wheedling tone and the raven a pompous drawl, and when Clara corrected his pronunciation ofresplendent—a word she had clearly learnt from Tristan and was deploying with proprietary satisfaction—Edwin accepted the correction without a flicker of condescension.

“You are better at the fox than the raven,” Clara informed him. “His Grace is better at the raven. He does a very good pompous voice.”

“I suspect His Grace has had considerable practice,” Edwin said.

From the hearth, a sound that might have been a breath drawn slightly too sharply through the nose.

Clara showed Edwin her drawings after the reading. She explained the fairy door beneath the beech tree. She described Bess’s lineage in forensic detail—the doll’s great-grandmother had been a silk handkerchief belonging to the Queen, a provenance Clara had constructed with the unwavering confidence of a child who understood that history was whatever you decided it was. Edwin listened to all of it, asking questions at intervals that suggested he was paying attention rather than performing.

Tristan endured it. He stood at the hearth with his arms folded and his weight on his heels, and Rosamund could see the cost of his restraint in the set of his shoulders—the tension held there, coiled and waiting, the posture of a man who was watching a predator circle and could not yet justify the kill.

When the visit ended and the front door closed, Rosamund pressed the violets between the pages of a book that evening. She did not examine why.

The third visit broke something open.

Edwin arrived with nothing in his hands. No gift, no token, no carefully selected offering designed to disarm. He simply came, sat on the carpet with Clara before Rosamund could suggest a chair, and asked her what she would like to build.

“A castle,” Clara said immediately. “With a moat. And a drawbridge. And a dungeon for people who are annoying.”

“An ambitious programme. Have you sufficient blocks?”

“I have blocks and books and a tin cup that Mrs Alcott says is not a building material but I have proved her wrong.”

They built. Edwin’s hands were steady and patient—not the hands of a man performing interest, but the unhurried, focused hands of a man who found the child’s company absorbing. The castle rose from the carpet in stages: the outer wall first, then the tower, then the moat (a ring of charcoal marks on a piece of paper that Clara placed around the foundation with the strategic precision of a military engineer).

The drawbridge was the problem.

“It will not stay,” Clara said, pressing two blocks together at an angle that physics refused to accommodate. “It keeps falling.”

“May I?” Edwin reached for the blocks. Clara watched him balance the longer piece across two shorter ones, creating a bridge that held—barely, precariously, with the structural integrity of a hope rather than a certainty.

“That is not a real drawbridge,” Clara said. “Real drawbridges go up and down.”

“Real drawbridges also have chains and counterweights and a team of men operating a mechanism that took several years to engineer. We have blocks and determination. Sometimes that must suffice.”

Clara considered this. “His Grace would have made it work.”

The words landed in the room with the inadvertent precision of a child who did not understand that she had just drawn a comparison between two men and awarded the victory to the absent one. Edwin’s expression did not change, but something behind it recalibrated—a tightening, a recalculation, too quick to be called a flinch but occupying the same neighbourhood.

“I am certain he would have,” Edwin said. “His Grace is a man of considerable resources.”

“He is a man of blocks,” Clara corrected. “He is very good at blocks. He builds towers and I knock them down. It is our arrangement.”

Rosamund watched Tristan’s face. He stood at the hearth as he always stood—rigid, watchful, his coffee untouched—but at Clara’s words something passed through his expression so quickly she might have imagined it. Not warmth. Not softness. Something fiercer. The look of a man who had just heard himself claimed by a child and did not know how to hold the weight of it.

Clara had moved on. She was explaining to Edwin that the dungeon required a door, and that the door required a hinge, and that the hinge required a level of engineering sophisticationthat blocks alone could not provide. Edwin listened gravely and suggested they improvise with a folded piece of paper.

“That is cheating,” Clara said.

“That is innovation.”

“His Grace says innovation is what people call cheating when they wish to sound clever.”

Edwin laughed. The sound was warm and easy and precisely calibrated, and Rosamund could not tell—she could never tell, that was the cruelty of it—whether it was real.
