‘No, for some reason you just thought she’d be perfect for me because she can do a downward dog.’
‘Well, what more do you want?’
‘Someone I could have dinner with for a start. And that wasn’t the only thing. She brought me a present – a teddy bear dressed up as a chef.’
‘Aw. That’s so cute.’
‘He is cute. But that’s not the point. And get this – she made his outfit herself.’
‘I think that’s sweet.’
‘I bet you wouldn’t think it was sweet if some bloke you’d never met made a teddy bear in your likeness before your first date.’
‘Ew. No, that’d be creepy.’
‘Well, it’s just as creepy for me. So no more set-ups, please. Tell Mum to call off her mission. I’ll start going out more and meet someone the old-fashioned way.’
‘Okay, I’ll tell her. But Finn’s already given a vet he knows your number. You’ll have to go out with her.’
‘Or I could call it off.’
‘That’d be mean. She’s really excited to meet you, apparently.’
Aidan gave a martyred sigh. ‘Fine, but that’ll be the last one. Everyone else can stand down. I’ll find my own girlfriend, thank you very much. Or else I’ll just settle into life as the beloved spinster of the parish.’
At least today couldn’t get any worse, he thought, ending the call with Cara as he reached the restaurant.
