‘I am. She’s still my friend, just not my best friend.’ She sighed. ‘I hope Jack stays living here.’

‘Of course he will. Why wouldn’t he?’

Bo shrugged. ‘If he doesn’t like it here, he’s going back to live in Dublin.’

‘Who says?’ Aidan frowned.

‘His mum. They’re just trying it out and if they don’t like it here, they’re going back to Dublin.’

‘Are you sure?’

Bo nodded. ‘She said they’d go lickety-split. What’s lickety-split mean?’

‘It means as fast as can be,’ Aidan said distractedly. Huh! Lou had never mentioned this at her interview. She’d made it sound like the move was permanent, no question. But of course she would, wouldn’t she? She’d wanted him to give her a job.

It was annoying she’d felt she had to hoodwink him into it because if she’d been upfront about it, he’d likely have hired her anyway. She was a single mother starting over in a town where she knew nobody. He’d have been inclined to give her a break. But she couldn’t have known that, so it was understandable, he supposed.

‘I think that’s why Jack can’t have a pet yet.’

‘Oh?’

‘Yeah,’ Bo said, her eyes drooping. ‘They have to wait until they decide to stay.’ She opened her mouth in a wide yawn.

‘Well, we’ll just have to make sure they like it here, then, won’t we?’ he said, tucking the duvet tighter around her as he leaned down to give her a kiss.
