‘So, this is me,’ she informed Aiden, grabbing her case. She swung it onto a trolley with a grunt.

‘I get to hang around here for a while,’ he said, ‘Have some more terrible coffee while I wait.’

‘Lucky you,’ she replied. ‘And enjoy your weekend. I’m sure everything will be grand.’

Aiden extended his hand towards her and as Alex slipped her hand into his, she felt every nerve in her body react. They paused, neither of them letting go right away.

‘I guess this is goodbye,’ he said. ‘It’s been—’

‘You should take my number,’ Alex blurted out. ‘You know, for pet emergencies or advice, whatever.’

His gaze dipped momentarily. ‘Pet emergencies,’ he repeated, considering this.

Alex knew this was not her finest hour. Offering up her number to someone else’s boyfriend was icky at best, but in that moment, she knew she’d regret it if she just walked away.

‘I can do that. Sure.’

‘Great,’ she replied, feeling like her heart might just beat out of her chest cartoon style and give her away completely. Still holding hands, he reached into his pocket and handed Alex his phone.
