“I can’t believe you’re not coming to the party,” Cassie is saying as I busy myself cleaning the refrigerator at the café. “It’s exactly what you need right now… a fun distraction.”

“I hardly consider watching Colton Rossi frolicking with a bunch of women a fun distraction,” I tell her. “I’d rather just stay home. And besides, I have nothing to wear. I’ve already worn both of my dresses, at Colton’s party and last weekend at Judy’s celebration and funeral.”

“You know you can always borrow my stuff,” she reminds me. “Some of my dresses are probably too small, but a few would fit.”

“Nah,” I say. “I’m good.”

She sighs as she says goodbye. She doesn’t understand where I am right now. I really don’t feel like partying. All I want is to lie in bed, stare at my television like a zombie, and sleep. The little energy I have needs to be reserved for Christian. He needs me more than ever.

It’s Thursday night, and I’m surprised to receive an email from Colton.

Hi Clara,

I hope you are keeping well. I’ve chosen to give you your space, because I got the impression that’s what you wanted the last time we were together. Please let me know if I’m mistaken.

As you know, my monthly party happens this Saturday, and I’d love it if you could be there. It won’t be the same without you. I know you are still grieving, but a fun party might just be what the doctor ordered.

Thinking of you,

Colton

He doesn’t get it either. Nobody gets it. Save for Christian.
