The world around them narrowed until there was nothing but the two of them. The puzzle lay forgotten, its picture complete, while they explored this new, uncharted connection that unfolded with every second their lips remained locked.
As Lucas finally drew back, he realized that life was painting a landscape more vivid and thrilling than any he could have envisioned.
In the quiet aftermath, they exchanged a look of mutual wonder, their kiss having opened a door they both hesitated to acknowledge was even there. Yet, as they sat in the afterglow, Melanie realized that what started as a shared triumph over a thousand-piece puzzle had blossomed into something infinitely more complex and beautiful.
Chapter Seven
Melanie sat at her desk, a fortress of papers standing tall before her. She sifted through invoices and order forms with the precision of a seasoned strategist, her green eyes scanning figures and forecasts that told the tale of her thriving freeze-drying business. She hated doing business on a Saturday afternoon, especially when she was so newly married, but Lucas was out meeting with the vet over one of the horses. She would work until she heard him return to the house.
Amidst the sea of documents, something unusual caught Melanie's attention—a book with a vibrant cover tucked away under a stack of supply lists. It was a marketing guide she didn't remember purchasing, its title embossed in bold, promising letters. Curiosity flickered in her mind like a spark threatening to ignite. She set aside her paperwork, reached for the book, and turned it over in her hands. She hadn’t gone to college, but she learned as much as she could on her own. Perhaps she should lean a little more on Lucas’s business acumen.
"Discover Your Business Potential: A Modern Approach to Marketing" read the title. With a mixture of skepticism and intrigue, Melanie flipped open the cover and began to peruse the pages. Paragraphs about market analysis, brand positioning, and consumer engagement leaped out at her, each concept resonating with an unexpected familiarity. It was as if the words were pieces of a jigsaw puzzle she'd been solving nightly, falling effortlessly into place. Now she remembered this book. She’d purchased it long before, and the housekeeper must have been working in her office and set it on her desk.
When she’d purchased it, it had made little sense, because she knew nothing of the finer points of business. Now that she looked at it again, it made sense to her, and she was thrilled.
As she delved deeper into the chapters, a revelation washed over her. She wasn't just comprehending the strategies; she was anticipating them, her mind racing ahead to the next point, the next tactic. It was thrilling, this sense of kinship with the subject matter. Marketing wasn't just a series of dry principles. It was something she not only understood but excelled at.
Her heart began to race with the budding recognition of her own capabilities. How many ideas had she already implemented without even realizing they were textbook tactics? The seasonal campaigns, the community events, the personal touches in customer service—all facets of an innate talent she hadn't known she possessed.
The potential of what this meant for her business sent a wave of excitement coursing through her veins. She could see it now, the path unfurling before her, ripe with opportunity.
Melanie leaned back in her chair, the marketing book clutched in her hands like a treasure chest of possibilities. A smile tugged at the corners of her mouth, born of a confidence that felt both old and new.
With a sense of purpose, Melanie strode toward the barn, the marketing book snug under her arm. The rhythmic sound of Lucas's work with the animals punctuated the air, and she found herself moving to its comforting beat.
Lucas was busy raking fresh straw into the stalls, his broad shoulders flexing with each movement. He didn’t notice her immediately, so engrossed was he in his task, which allowed Melanie a moment to admire the steadfast man who had come to share in her world.
"Lucas," she called out gently.
He turned toward her voice, his face breaking into a warm smile that reached his eyes and crinkled the corners. "Hey there, Mel," Lucas greeted, leaning his weight onto the rake. “What brings you out to my humble abode?”
Melanie's own smile mirrored his as she closed the distance between them. The excitement within her bubbled up again, like champagne fizzing eagerly to escape the bottle. She could hardly contain the news that felt like it would change everything.
"I've just had the most amazing realization," she began, her voice alive with enthusiasm. She took a breath, grounding herself in the moment before sharing her vision. "I've been reading this marketing book, and Lucas, it's like I've discovered a hidden part of myself." Her hands animatedly gestured to the book, as if it were a sacred text containing all the secrets of their success yet to come.
Lucas’s brows rose, his interest piqued by her fervor. "Oh yeah?" he said, straightening up, the rake momentarily forgotten. "Tell me more about this epiphany of yours."
Melanie opened the book to a dog-eared page, pointing to a passage that had particularly inspired her. "It's all here—how to connect with customers, build our brand, create a message that resonates. I’ve been doing some of these things instinctively, but now I see how we can amplify it, and make it intentional. There’s so much potential for the business, and I think I can lead us there." When he simply grinned, she continued. “Most companies who work with freeze-dried food focus their marketing on people who think the world is ending—preppers. But I immediately put my focus on the busy moms. I see my ideal client as a mom who finds herself as the primary breadwinner who has a couple of kids, maybe one is autistic, and a husband who has health issues and can’t work. But she’s still the one who’s trying to figure out all the meals because she’s the mom, and it’s expected of her, even though she’s the only one working. Does that make sense?”
Her words tumbled out in a rush, each one infused with the certainty that they were on the cusp of something grand. As she spoke, Melanie watched Lucas absorb her passion, and saw the flicker of recognition in his eyes that mirrored her own determination.
He nodded. "Ramp up our marketing, huh?" Lucas said thoughtfully, a hint of admiration coloring his tone. "That sounds like an adventure. And if anyone can take us to the next level, it's you, Melanie.” He didn’t mention the marketing courses he’d taken in college as part of his MBA. It would be better if she figured things out on her own.
Lucas folded his arms, leaning against the wooden frame of the barn door. A soft smile played on his lips as he watched Melanie's animated gestures, her hands painting the future in broad, bold strokes. "You have an amazing head for business," he said, his voice a low timbre that carried the weight of his conviction. "This is your moment, Mel. Seize it."
With a nod, Melanie stepped closer, her hand finding his. Their fingers intertwined, a silent promise of partnership and support.
"Thank you, Lucas," she whispered, her voice catching with emotion. "With you by my side, I feel like anything is possible."
"Because it is," he replied, squeezing her hand gently before letting go.
“Would you mind if I bounced some ideas off of you?” she asked softly.
He smiled. “I’ll help in any way I can.” He was surprised at just how much he enjoyed watching her mind work as she came up with new ideas. She was worming her way into his heart whether he liked it or not.
Melanie turned, her stride purposeful as she made her way back to her office. She rolled up her sleeves, ready to dive into the world of marketing with fresh eyes and renewed vigor. The whiteboard loomed large against the far wall, a blank canvas awaiting her ideas.
Pulling a marker from the tray, she uncapped it with a satisfying click. Her thoughts tumbled onto the board in a flurry of words and sketches. "Social media," she wrote, underlining it twice for emphasis. A web of lines connected to new phrases: "Engaging content" and "Brand ambassadors."
