“I do, but, um, we shouldn't,” she said. There was so much longing, but I could sense her trepidation.

Tell her we can stop the moment she isn't happy,I said.

Hush, let me work,Danzig said, sending me a mental shove.

“We won’t do anything you don’t want, Bec,” Danzig murmured, his lips right next to her ear. “All we want to do is worship our queen of the serpents.”

I used my forked tongue to grasp at her pant leg, emphasizing Danzig’s words. Her eyes focused on my tongue, her pupils expanding. She liked the look of my tongue.

Tell her what I can do!I told Danzig.

Danzig used a hand to tug Bec’s shirt up a little, revealing a slip of bare flesh.

Show her yourself.

I ran my tongue over her skin, then gently played with her belly button. She gasped and shuddered. I pulled my tongue back in my mouth and waited.

“Wh-wh-what’s he doing?” she stuttered. “Why did he stop?”

“He's waiting for permission,” Danzig said. “Will you let him show you what he can do with that tongue? Let us worship your body Bec.”

“But we’re out in the open,” she whispered. “What if someone comes over here?”

“I can fix that,” Danzig said, and I felt him send out a pulse of power. It soaked into the grass below us and clung to the trees around us. It was a clear warning for everyone to keep their distance from us. It wasn't a barrier, simply a warning.

“It feels like static just flowed across my skin,” Bec said with a shiver. “What did you do?”

“Magic,” Danzig said. “No one will bother us now.”

Not unless they want to die,I grumbled.

“What did you say about dying?” Bec asked, making both Danzig and I jerk with surprise.

Did she hear me?I asked.

No, she couldn't have,Danzig denied

“Um, why are you guys upset?” she asked, sounding worried.

“We aren’t,” Danzig said. “Can you hear Marduk speaking to me?”

She frowned slightly. “I’m not hearing a conversation, exactly. It’s more like soft mumbling where I’m making out a word or two.”

“That’s incredible," Danzig said, echoing my own thoughts.

“Why do you say that?”

“Because not even our mother can hear us when we speak like that to each other,” Danzig said.

Absolute adoration flowed through me. Bec’s ability to hear us was another sign that she was meant to be our mate.

Even though I knew from the beginning that we were all meant to be together, her reluctance had me worried. Shouldn’t mates fall over themselves to be with each other? Although humans could be slow to feel the magic, Bec’s continued rejection of us had been difficult. No, not simply difficult. It hurt.

To find out that she could do something no one else could made me rejoice.

“Why do I get the feeling that Marduk is really happy?” Bec asked. She sounded a little breathless as well as confused.

“Because he is,” Danzig said with a low chuckle. He nuzzled his face against the side of her head and licked the delicate shell of her ear.
