She bit my lip, sighing softly as she did and this time, I allowed her to slip from my grip. With her eyes never leaving mine, she turned off the machines before proceeding to remove the gummy stickers holding the sensors in position all over my body.

“You know I could lose my job.”

Shrugging, I offered a smile in return. “You won’t need a job in a few days.”

“Now. Now. I’m a working woman and you aren’t going to tell me what to do.” When she was finished, she glanced at the door before walking toward it.

“You will learn that you’re required to do everything I say. And where do you think you’re going?”

“You obviously don’t know me very well and unless you want an audience, I’m going to ensure we’re left very much alone.”

I was able to laugh, even with my mind continuing to process what would be the necessary next steps. Approaching Sean McCarthy had now been added to the list. The fact I was still alive meant whatever she’d said to him had given him pause.

I’d learn more about their conversation later when I was certain we didn’t have anyone listening in. “Smart girl.”

“I keep telling you that.” She opened the door and from where I was stuck in the bed, I was able to see two figures standing watch outside. With Dimitri back from Boston, if I knew the man at all, he’d already contacted Kazimir.

Not that I could blame him.

“Is everything alright?” The voice was one I recognized. He stuck his head in, his hand already on the weapon hidden under his jacket.

“I’m fine, Dante. The lovely doctor and I simply need to have a private conversation.”

He grinned like a young man his age would do. “Yes, sir. I mean boss. We’ll be right here if you need anything.”

“Is everything quiet?” I pressed, which annoyed my doctor. Her pinched face was proof.

“Mostly. There was an unruly patient earlier, but the nurses got him under control and in his room.”

“Keep an eye out. I’ll be leaving first thing in the morning.”

“Yes, sir.” Dante closed the door.

“He cares about you,” Vivian said as she returned to the bed, immediately running her fingers down my arm.

“He is Kazimir’s brother-in-law.”

“I didn’t know that. All in the family. Admirable.”

“When families can be trusted, yes.”

The comment gave her pause, her mood shifting into something much more serious. But the apprehension quickly faded, sliding into something much darker and more primal.

A woman after my own heart.

“Agreed.” She placed her finger across my lips. “No more discussing business. It’s not good for your heart.”

“Whatever you say, Doctor.”

Damn, the woman was going to push me to limits I didn’t know I had. When I tried to remove the gown, she clamped her hands on mine. “That could rip your stitches. We need to be careful with that shoulder. You shouldn’t move that arm. And forget about rolling over.”

“Then what do you suggest?”

With another quick look over her shoulder, she ripped off her top, exposing her full breasts without a bra. My mouth immediately watered. “That I do all the work.”

“Hmmm… As in you having the control. That’s never going to happen.”

She stopped undressing, offering another stern, doctorly look. “Then I guess I’ll leave you alone for the night. Is that what you’d prefer?”
