“I thought you said we didn’t have time.”

“I just need a taste,” he mutters against my skin. My hands go to the back of his head, trapping him in place. God, I could come just from his mouth on my breast.

“Jackson.” His name comes out as a needy plea, and he takes pity on me.

“Oh!” I cry out as his fingers plunge inside of me. He moves quickly, thumbing my clit, sucking on my breast, and playing me up and over the edge within minutes. I sag into his arms, breathing heavily, my skin feeling every drop of water, it’s so sensitive right now.

“I thought you said we didn’t have time?” I manage to say eventually, opening my eyes to see him smirking.

“I was too hungry to wait.”

Chapter 20

Jackson

To the rest of the world, nothing has changed between Mila and I. But to us, everything has. I feel it and I know she does, too. Her smile is bigger, and her arms hold me tighter when she hugs me in public. And I can kiss her, not that I couldn’t before, but now I can linger. I can taste and savour her, kissing her long and deep until she pulls back with that beautiful pink flush covering her cheeks.

And I’m happy. Happier than I can ever remember. Thanks, in no small part, to the incredible sex we have every night. I can honestly say I never knew I could feel this satisfied.

When her alarm goes off each morning, I walk with her to the bakery, then head out for a workout. Most days it’s still warm enough to get out on the water for a paddle, but sometimes I go for a run. I’m starting to understand why Mila says she likes her early mornings. It is a peaceful feeling, like we are the only two people awake, and the world is ours.

We’ve been official for a few weeks, but it feels like so much longer, thanks to all the time we spent pretending. The conversation about whether or not we should come clean to our friends hasn’t come up, and I’m grateful. I really just want to pretend that whole fake relationship shit never happened, and convince ourselves that we’ve always been this way. Deliriously happy and completely insatiable for each other.

“Honey, I’m home!” Mila walks into my kitchen where I’m popping the tops off of two bottles of craft beer. I hand one to her, leaning down for a kiss.

“You’re ridiculous, you know that?” I mutter against her smile. Milo nudges my knee, and I pat his head. Truthfully, I kind of love how comfortable the two of them are here. Almost as much as I love how comfortable I am at her place. Sure, it’s a bit crazy having clothing at two places, and half the time we forget something we really need that’s at the other house, but it works. Neither one of us wants to rush things, so even if we are together all the time, we keep our own homes.

Later, over dinner, I slide an envelope across the table to her. She looks up from her bowl of seafood pasta with a curious smile teasing her lips.

“The last time you had an envelope to share with me it was your offer letter from Morton. What is it this time?”

I shrug. “Open it and find out.” I have to fight back my own grin of excitement as she pulls out the reservation confirmation for a two-night stay at a luxury hotel on the mainland. It’s situated right in the heart of BC’s wine country, and I made sure to also book us a private wine tour.

“Jackson, what in the world?” Her eyes are shining when she meets my gaze.

“I’ve already worked it out with Kelly. She’ll cover for you on Monday, and you’re going to close a little early on Saturday so we can catch the ferry. Ethan and Summer will pet sit, all we have to do is sit back and relax for a couple of days.”

She leans over and kisses me. “I’m beyond excited, but why?”

“Because I got partner at the clinic, because you’re so close to opening the café, because you haven’t taken any time off all summer, and because you deserve to be spoiled by the guy who’s crazy about you.”

Mila drops her fork down, pushes her chair back, and comes around the table to sit sideways in my lap. Her hands wrap around my neck and I see a tear slowly fall from her eyes. My thumb reaches up to gently caress it away.

“How did I get so lucky?”

Our lips touch. “You wooed me with muffins. I was powerless against your cinnamon buns. And your dog loves me.” She starts to giggle, then full-on laugh, tossing her head back. When her laughter subsides, she looks at me, and the emotions I see beaming out of her take my breath away. She leans back down and feathers my face with light kisses before landing back on my lips.

“I still don’t think I deserve you, but thank you,” she whispers.

I push my chair back and lift her into my arms.

“Wait, where are we going? What about dinner?” Mila swats at my arm half-heartedly.

“We can come back to it. Right now, I apparently need to prove to you that you deserve everything and more.”

Which I am more than happy to do, over and over until we fall asleep, dinner forgotten.

“Oh my God, it’s so fancy,” Mila says under her breath as we walk into the lobby of the hotel. I have to admit to some regret when she told me the story of Cole Devereaux, CEO of Devereaux Hotels International, trying to buy Oceanside Resort from Summer, and all the drama it caused with her and Ethan. But here we are, standing inside one of his luxury hotels, about to enjoy everything it has to offer.
