“Silver.”
“Did you stop Caroline Simms that night?”
Danny’s face changed.
“Yes,” he whispered.
Judge Harlan leaned forward.
“Answer audibly, Trooper.”
Danny swallowed.
“Yes, sir. I stopped her.”
A murmur moved through the courtroom and died just as quickly.
“Why?”
“I just wanted to talk to her.”
“About what?”
A long pause.
“Davie.”
David turned sharply at the defense table.
Eleanor kept her eyes on Danny.
“You activated your blue lights and conducted a traffic stop because you wanted to talk to Caroline Simms about Davie?”
“Yes.”
“You did not issue a citation?”
“No.”
“You did not report the stop?”
“No.”
“You did not tell investigators you had seen her that night?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
Danny’s hand shifted on the witness rail.
“Because it was nothing.”
“A stop of the missing woman’s vehicle on the night she vanished was nothing?”
“It was just a conversation.”
“What kind of conversation?”
