She pulled back slightly, looking up at him. “I’d do it all again, you know. The running. The pyre. All of it. To be here with you.”

His arms threaded around her waist. “I’ll make sure you never have to,” he said fiercely.

“I know,” she smiled.

In the soft lantern light on the evening of their wedding, with his lips on hers, and his arms around her, Kara had never loved him more. Would never forget this moment. She felt complete.

All of Vallenna knew it now: she was his, and he was hers. They’d fought death itself for this moment, and not even that had been able to tear them apart.

Three months later.

Across the Eastern Reach, in the high towers of Occarlia, unease had taken root. The Occarli had felt a shiver through the threads of time across the western sea. A disruption where none should be.

For generations, Vallenna had sworn to the Occarli that time would remain untouched. It was the promise that bound them, the one law the Guardians of Time demanded above all else.

It had taken months to untangle the weaves – Vallenna’s battle with Draknor had been chaos. So many threads cut, so much death all at once. Sorting through the wreckage to find the one thread that had survived when it should have ended had been painstaking work. But the Arbiter had traced the knot back to its source.
