‘I really like French toast.’

‘Ohfuck,me too.I could polish off three servings, easy.’

‘Right?’Kade grins.‘Damn, now I want French toast.’

‘You wanna hit a diner?’

‘Can we?’

‘It’s your world, sweetheart. We can do whatever you want.’

?

It’s the best French toast of hisentire fucking life.

Kade barely holds himself back from groaning as he takes the first massive bite, dripping with syrup, powdered sugar and a side of bacon waiting for him on a different plate.

Lachlan ordered the same only double, says that they can share the extra.

Lachlan eats alot, it seems.

‘Thithithhthogooth,’ Kade moans, mouth full.

Lachlan nods in agreement, too busy eating.

Kade swallows, washes it down with his coffee.‘I still hate you.’Lachlan performs a lazy two-fingered salute, didn’t even look up.‘Is it, like, for your metabolism?’Kade gestures to the food.‘Your healing?’

‘No idea.’Lachlan already cleaned his first plate.‘Wasn’t exactly a manual.’

‘So, the book Riley wants,’ Kade says, while Lachlan starts in on the second plate, calls the waitress over.‘Are you actually gonna give it to him?’

‘That depends,’ Lachlan says and then smiles at the waitress in a friendly way.‘Can I get another of these, please?’he says, gesturing to the second helping of French toast and bacon which he is clearly about to demolish.

‘Pretty hungry, huh?’she chuckles.

‘Starved. Thanks so much.I’ll give it to you,’ he says to Kade more seriously when she walks away.‘You decide what to do with it.’

‘I’d appreciate that.No one fucks with Lee.’

Lachlan makes a subtle face.‘Apparently so.’

‘So you knew Lee well?’

‘No, but she was my tech person.’

‘And you never thought her and Blaire were sisters?’

‘You have to understand, the Estate was like a different planet. No laws applied there beyond what the old man decided. He killed people in front of me.He hadmekill people.Bodies went where he ordered them.If Alistair Penhalyx decided night was day and day was night, we would have found a way to adjust.I lost sight of anything that wasn’t there on those grounds, especially the last few months. It became my world. You, MimiandBlaire were my whole life.Even Danya.’

‘Who’s Danya?’

Lachlan just shakes his head and Kade senses another unhappy ending somewhere that Lachlan would rather not speak of.

‘What was she like?’Kade asks carefully after a minute. He’s almost scared to hear the answer, but he’s starting to need it.‘Mimi.’

Lachlan sighs, gaze fixed unseeingly while he gathers himself to answer.

‘She was a fighter, my girl,’ he tells Kade.‘She loved being outdoors. She loved her Wendy House, called it theTowerwhen I added a second storey.’Kade’s throat thickens slightly but he ignores it.‘She adored animals, wasn’t scared of any kind, even bugs and spiders. She loved foxes but she never saw one.She was my daughter in every way but blood and she loved you so much.’
