Bas had transported Dr. Emerson to the Mansion, and now she paced at the head of the table, her emerald robes swirling around her. "Last night's incident proves that the Aether Pirates are growing bolder and more resourceful. They've tracked us to our sanctuary, which means our defenses are not as well hidden as we thought."
Dr. Emerson, looking more vibrant than he had in weeks thanks to Chad's healing, leaned forward. "We need to assume they'll try again. And soon."
"Last night's incident has made it clear that our enemies are growing bolder." Bas paced, her emerald robes shimmering as she moved. "The anomalies are appearing more frequently, and in locations we previously thought were secure."
Lioness spoke up, her voice tinged with concern. "Could they be tracking the Codex somehow?"
Bas nodded grimly. "It's possible. The Codex Temporis is an incredibly powerful artifact. Its temporal energy could be leaving a trace that the Aether Pirates can follow."
"So, what do we do?" Chad asked, leaning forward. "We can't just sit here waiting for them to attack again."
Dr. Emerson stroked his beard thoughtfully. "We need to go on the offensive. Take the fight to them before they can fully breach our reality."
Brianna's eyes widened. "You mean... enter the Aether ourselves?"
A hush fell over the room as the implications sank in.
Bas's expression was grave as she replied, "That may be our best option at this point. We need to seal the tears in reality from both sides."
Chad felt a chill run down his spine. "Is that even possible? I mean, what do we know about the other side of the Aether?”
Dr. Emerson leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with intensity. "We know precious little about the Aether itself, but we have theories. It's believed to be a sort of liminal space between realities. A nexus point where different dimensions intersect."
"And the Aether Pirates?" Chad prompted. "What do we know about them?"
Bas's expression darkened. "They're interdimensional marauders, drawn to sources of great power. We believe they seek to harness the energy of the Codex Temporis to break down the barriers between worlds and time, completely."
Brianna shuddered. "And if they succeed?"
"Chaos," Dr. Emerson said grimly. "The collapse of reality as we know it."
Chad took a deep breath, trying to process the enormity of what they were facing. "Okay, so how would we 'take the fight to them’, exactly?”
“That is what we’ve been wrestling with.” Bas's emerald eyes gleamed with determination. "We'll need to create a controlled portal into the Aether itself. It's incredibly risky, but Dr.Emerson has figured out a way. With Chad's Word Warrior abilities to command and manipulate any pirates we may come across, and the power of the Codex Temporis, we may be able to stabilize a gateway at the Library of Congress long enough to seal the tears from both sides."
Brianna gripped Chad's hand tightly under the table. "It sounds incredibly dangerous."
"I'll go," Chad said without hesitation, his voice steady despite the fear churning in his gut. "My abilities seem to be the key to all of this. It has to be me."
"Not alone, you won't," Brianna said firmly. "I'm going with you.”
“No, you won’t,” Lioness interjected. “You and Chad are too close. He’ll have one eye on the pirates and the other eye on you. We know he’s incredibly protective of you.”
“But—”
“No, Brianna!” Bas thumped the table in an unusual demonstration of authority. “Lioness is right. All of our members have their specific skills and their parts to play. For instance, Sahara is our tech guru. She will monitor the Internet from here, looking for any unusual reports; Lioness is our remote viewer and will keep everyone on this side apprised of what is happening in the aether; Crystal is our sharpshooter, she is coming with us; Magda is a gifted herbal healer. She will be back here, right outside the portal to tend to the wounded.”
“Wounded? What are you expecting to happen? If Chad can freeze the Aether Pirates with a command, shouldn’t all of us be safe?”
“You never know, Brianna,” Joell said. “You haven’t been involved in some of our more dangerous fights, but the rest of us have learned to expect the unexpected.”
Brianna sighed. “All right. Well, let me know if I have to roll back and reset the whole damn thing.”
Chad squeezed her hand and smiled. “You have no idea how reassuring your do-over ability will be to all of us.”
“Ain’t that the truth,” Lioness said, under her breath.
The preparationsfor the mission into the Aether were intense and meticulous. Chad spent hours practicing his Word Warrior abilities under Dr. Emerson's watchful eye, honing his control and expanding the range of his commands. Bas and the other witches worked tirelessly to create a stable portal, infusing it with protective enchantments.
