Jamey made a sad face. “What a shame you’re too late.”

Stone froze. “What?”

Something small and black sliced the air in front of Reece like a bullet. It struck Stone’s hand and he shrieked in pain, dropping the gun and leaping back. The gun clattered uselessly to the roof on top of the shattered remains of a—cell phone?

“Appreciate the distraction once again, Detective.”

Grayson.

He was next to the glass room with the elevator, the door to the emergency stairs closing behind him. He was listing slightly to the side, and his coat was covered in blood.

But he was here.

“Evan,” Reece whispered.

“Evan.” Stone’s mask was gone, nothing hiding that fear. He looked at Jamey. “But how did you—”

“Heard feet running up the stairs.” She smiled with narrowed eyes. “Fast ones.”

Grayson took a step forward. “Woke up in a hospital,” he said. “And funny thing was, no one seemed real keen to let me leave. But I had to insist, because I remembered it’s been an awful long time since I checked my drop box here at Stone Solutions.”

Stone took a step back. “I can explain—”

“And good thing I did.” Grayson nodded at the ground and the smashed remains of the cell phone. “’Cause I had a package waiting.”

Stone had gone pale as a ghost. “Evan—”

“Did you know Dr. Owens was recording y’all’s phone calls? You, in particular, had a lot of interesting things to say about empaths. And speaking of empaths—” Grayson slid the coat from his shoulders and tossed it to the side. “Care Bear, be a peach and close your eyes so your sister and I can kick some ass.”

Reece barely had time to screw his eyes shut as chaos broke out around him. The helicopter took off, rising passengerless into the sky. The men holding him let go as they shouted and chased after it. Reece hit the roof on hands and knees and awkwardly scrambled forward, trying to get to Jamey.

Boots were suddenly in front of him, blocking his path. He looked up at one of Stone’s lackeys, into an angry face and outstretched gloves—

Jamey slammed into the man with her shoulder, sending him stumbling into another man Reece hadn’t even seen coming so they both toppled to the ground. She jerked her head at the elevator. “You shouldn’t see this.”

Reece scrambled up to his feet. “It’s ten against three—”

“It’s about to be ten against two once I get you the hell out of here, and Grayson and I are not going to hold back.”

Reece choked on a hysterical noise. He was trying so hard not to watch the fight, but he could hear gunshots and blow after blow hitting home. “Jamey—”

“Move your feet, Reece, let’s go.”

Together, they stumbled across the roof, Reece still in handcuffs, Jamey with the chain around her arms. Another man popped up in front of them, but Jamey kicked him in the chest, sending him flying across the roof and into the industrial HVAC system hard enough to dent it.

Reece cringed, an echo of pain flaring along his own back and spine.

“Sorry.” Jamey wiped her face on her shoulder. “I’m still a little moremethan normal.”

Reece looked at her in alarm. “Jamey?”

These red tears were new.

She blinked hard. “I told you Cora’s empathy wasn’t out of my system yet. But I’ll beat it. Am I lying?”

He bit his lip and shook his head no.

“I believe I can beat it,” she said. “But I need to know you’re safe. Come on.”
