It was dark, but he could see how widely her eyes rounded.
The voices were muffled, not necessarily due to distance and much more probably due to alcohol consumption.
The woman squealed and the man chortled.
“What do we have here?”The woman asked.“Did you plan this? How did you know that this was my favorite book?”
“I know more than you think,” was the man’s vague reply.
Soren rolled his eyes. This was going to be painful.
Though…
The body he hovered against said otherwise. The hover was real. There was no contact.Just her soft puffs of breath close to his jaw.And a body that may as well have been a raging fire for all the heat it radiated.
For a brief moment in time he considered that this might not be the worst possible predicament. That is, until he caught her eyes. Before, she had looked irritated, but now he could see something akin to horror glimmer across her face.
Lifting his hand off of her mouth, he nodded and encouraged her to speak by leaning in.
“We need to get out of here,” she whispered. And those words really shouldn’t have caused his entire body to shiver, yet somehow they did.
To peek around the curtains was not too much of a risk, given their attention to each other, but all Soren could see was that an escape through the door would be next to impossible.
The window however…was an option.
“The door’s blocked. We’ll exit through the window and find our way back in through the terrace.”
“But what if they hear us?”
“At least they won’t see you.”
She nodded and in less than a fraction of a second, he cracked the window and practically pushed her out of it.
A grumbled shout—but no impending footsteps—was all that followed them out into the darkness.
Chapter 5
Soren
“Ooomph!”followedbyastifled squeak led Soren to believe that a soft moan like that of a painful ankle might be next. But as he traipsed after Pru in the darkness—and not by his first choice—behind the bushes, the only sounds he heard were leaves rustling and branches snapping. When Pru stepped out from behind the hedge and pulled up so fast that he nearly collided into her, he finally caught wind of the moan he’d been waiting for.
Only.
It wasn’t a painful moan.
No.He knew that kind of moan.
“The devil take it,” he hissed, just as Pru gasped.
“Heaven help us!”And she shielded her eyes.
Quickly, he snatched her around the waist and brought her back behind the bushes. The only saving grace was that the naked widow Lynette and her lover were facing away from them. The position. The buttocks–buttockses–none of that would even remotely save them this evening.
Soren put his hand to Pru’s waist.“Are you all right?”But he choked on the words on their way out because only when he had tried to speak did he realize the large lump of sand in his throat. And only when he looked down into her eyes did he take note of the burning sensation in his hand fastened onto her waist.
This was all wrong. All that heat building in him must be misplaced.Confused.
She was just one girl.
