“You never know. You might have seen something stupid while watching a movie,” I joke with her.
“I learnt my lesson the hard way with that one, when you and your brothers made fun of me.” Now this has me bursting out in laughter. It was so funny, we told mom not to watch Game of Thrones with us. She didn’t want to listen, not even an episode in, and she never watched another episode with us.
“How can I help you today, Mother?”
“I just want to remind you about dinner tonight.”
“I know told Mason and Miles. I’ll call Declan.”
“No, I trust you'll be there, you never miss family dinner. The thing is, I've just found out from Declan, it's also Trixie's birthday today, so me and dad have got her a gift, but I thought the three of you might want to get her something.” Mom stops when I let out a chuckle.
“What am I meant to get her drawing stuff? That's all she ever does.”
“Then get her some nice, drawing stuff.” My mom doesn’t sound so happy with my answer.
“Okay, I'll talk to Mason and Miles and see if we can all just chip in for something big. She was talking about wanting a new sewing machine a couple of days ago to Declan, wasn't she?”
“Oh, that's a lovely idea. Do you know anything about sewing machines?” My mom jokes knowing very well I don’t.
“No, we're just going to go into a shop and tell them that she designs dresses and shit, and then hopefully they'll just give us the best one.”
“Yes, boys will be boys. Okay, I’ll leave it with you three.”
“Mom, we'll get something before dinner tonight. Do you need me to pick up a cake?” I ask, this is a last minute birthday party so not sure what she has done and what she hasn’t.
“No, I’m baking one.”
“Of course you are. See you tonight, Mom.”
Well, this family dinner is going to be fun, but my question is why didn’t Declan tell us it’s her birthday. Looking up Mason, orMiles, whichever one will answer first, I stop and go to the group chat and hit the call button.
“Not in the car alone.” I say before even saying hello to them, knowing them well enough to know they will say something stupid.
“Oh, you found her then did you?” Mason starts, and before he can carry on, I talk next.
“Mom has just called me about dinner?—”
“Yes, we're coming.”
“No idiots, let me finish. Mom's just found out it's Trixie’s birthday.” I start and by the silence I don’t think they knew either.
“Oh, she kept that one secret, didn't she?” Miles jokes.
“Well, it's not like she talks to us all the time. Maybe the person in the car would like to share a secret,” Mason adds.
Trixie is getting better with us, sometimes we even get a sentence from her, she’s teaching Miles how to sign which Declan hates, because he says it's a way for them to have a secret conversation. So, Trixie said she'll only teach Miles the swear words. Which Miles was happy with.
“Anyway, mum and dad got a gift, she's making her cake?—”
“Of course, any reason for mom to bake a cake,” Miles jokes.
“She was talking to D about a sewing machine?—”
“And what sewing machine are we getting?” Mason snaps.
“I don't know, we'll go into a shop and just ask them. She designs clothes. There's got to be a specific one. I’ll pick you up from the house.”
“Does the mall even have sewing machine shops?” Miles asks.
