… I just want to feel safe…

My phone buzzes as I lay on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. Ella is still curled up into my body and even though I haven’t really been able to sleep after what she told me last night, I couldn’t be more at ease at this moment. I feel complete with her lying here. Checking the message, I see one from Dom as he says that he is on his way over.

Putting my leg on before I stand and then walking downstairs. Dom only lives a few minutes from here.

As he used to do so many years ago, he just walks in, which makes me laugh out loud as I'm trying to put something together for Ella to eat when she wakes up.

“Fuck, Carter.” He laughs as he comes around the corner. “She still asleep?”

“Yeah,” I nod to him, causing him to laugh.

“Look man, I’m sorry I didn’t come by after you got home. I’m going to be honest with you and tell you I didn’t know how to deal with it. I didn’t know if you were okay. I kind of fucking hate myself that I didn’t.”

“Come on, man. We were 21. We’re good.”

“Ok,” then he laughs. “What the fuck have you gotten yourself into? How old is she?” I hesitate, looking over at him before he laughs, “Not as the owner of the bar that you had to come pick her up from last night, but as the best friend you grew up with who’s just worried about you.”

“18.” I admit to him, and he nearly chokes on his drink.

“Fucking hell, man.” Then he stops and looks at me again. “Wait, they were celebrating her birthday.” I just press my lips together and nod my head again. He laughs out with a concerned look on his face.

“Fuck off.” I mumble. “It’s not like that.”

“Yeah, sure it fucking isn’t.” He laughs again, shaking his head. “I mean, don’t get me wrong, she’s fucking hot.” I just cut my eyes at him, causing him to laugh out loud. “But…”

“Nothing’s happened.”

“You’re telling me you drove from The End last night to pick her up and brought her back here where you two were alone and nothing happened.”

“That’s exactly what I’m saying.”

“How the fuck did you even meet this jailbait?”

“Not fucking funny.” He laughs, thinking he is indeed hilarious and honestly, it kind of is, especially since technically she isn’t... anymore. “And trust me, you don’t want to know.”

“Come on, man, it's a little funny. Now you have to tell me.”

Groaning, he laughs again and hops onto the counter. “Fine, but I’m warning, you don’t want to know.” he just shakes his head like I’m not getting out of this one. “When I first prospected, her dad was the Prez before he got arrested and then stepped down.” His eyes widen, fucking huge.

He lets out a shocked laugh as he talks. “Oz Davis’s daughter?”

“Yeah.” I grimace as I look back at what I’m doing.

“Fuuuuck.” He laughs out as we both hear the feet on the stairs. “You’re gonna die.” I just laugh and shake my head. “You need a place to hide out on the lam. You know where I live.”

“Fuck off,” I quietly laugh as she rounds the corner and Dom looks at her, smiling.

“Good morning,” he laughs. “Feeling better today?”

“Yeah, much better. Sorry about last night.”

“It’s not a problem, shit happens.” Dom shrugs it off. “Carter, I’ll let you get back to your day. Hit me up when you’re in town next or when you need that hideout.” Laughing as he leaves the house.

“He’s a weird guy.” Ella laughs as she looks towards the door after him.

“You have no idea.” She laughs again.

“What did he mean, a hideout?”
