“What do you care?” He glances over his shoulder, looking back at Axe before he looks back at me.
“Well, Colin.” Axe starts and as I look over Colin’s shoulder I can see him glance down to his hand as if this isn’t a situation he is really that worried about and I guess he shouldn't be, “you currently have the mother of my child pinned against the wall… threateningly.” Axe looks back up, but he won’t make eye contact with me. “Against her will and let me just reiterate to you, Colin,” Axe stresses his name before he takes a step off of the last stair on the staircase. “I’ve killed better men than you for less.” Colin’s eyes widen as he looks back to me and I shrug. He takes a couple of steps back before he bolts out the front door.
Axe walks over to it, locking the deadbolt and looking back at me. “Kudos, great choice.” He gives me a look that makes me feel like less of a person and I sulk against the wall.
“Yeah, because your girlfriend is such a superb choice.” I snap at him as he shakes his head, walking back into the kitchen. As my words leave my mouth he stops, before he turns around, glaring at me.
Taking two steps towards me closing the gap he looks down at me, “not my girlfriend.”
“Have you told her that?” I’m not even sure why I’m being so fucking difficult.
“Yes.” He laughs out loud. “Multiple times.”
“She seems like she could be a little vapid. Are you sure she understood the words you used?” I glaring right back at him, not backing down. I wait for him to respond, but he just continues to stare me down longer. “So,not girlfriendsnow show up to family events and glare daggers at your ex like she wants to kill me.” His eyes change for a split second as he contemplates my words. I can see it in his eyes as his realization forms that I’m right that whatever-her-fucking-name-is has no idea that they are not together. And I’ve always have, had a problem with poking the bear. “And I wonder how could she have gotten that idea?” I snap at him before I watch a sinister smirk spread on his lips.
“I dunno Marcella, probably the same fucking way that Colin did.” Cutting my eyes at him. I start to ball my fist at my side. He has no fucking clue what he’s talking about, but he’s just trying to piss me off. Stepping closer into me, I take a step back. “I know you better than you probably know yourself.” He takes one more step, I step backwards and feel my back come flush against the wall. “Did you tell him that you weren’t together?” I just stare up at him, swallowing slightly. He snickers as he looks away from me. Leaning into me. “It’s funny how when you fuck people and don’t have that significant conversation they think you’re together. Only to wake up the next morning and you’re fucking gone.” My eyes grow wide as I realize that he’s just related this entire thing back to us. “You just love to play with everyone’s feeling’s don’t you?”
“You—” I start until he cuts me off.
“I,” he starts to shout before he pauses and takes a deep breath, closing his eyes. When he reopens them I watch as his mouth opens and I cut him off.
“You made your choice. You told me to leave.” I move my hands up, still balled in fists, to hit him, but he grips ahold of my wrist quickly pressing it into the wall. Moving my left fist quicker than the other he grips that one as well, pinning me in place as I look to him.
Leaning into me, he lowers his head so that I’m looking right up at him and I have to purposely remind myself not to bite my lip and look up to him as images come flooding back to me. “I told you to go home. We had just had a fight where I got my literal ass kicked for you. You weren’t supposed to get into your car and fucking leave town.”
“Yeah, and it took you days to even try to call me…” I don’t know why I’m saying this to him but he just shakes his head.
“Yeah,” he shouts at me now. “And how long did it take you…” he pauses as he drops my hands from against the wall and slowly backs up. I continue to stand against the wall, just waiting for him to finish as he stares at me, even though I already know what he’s going to say.
But he doesn’t finish his thought, he just shakes his head as he turns to walk up the stairs.
The movers show up the next morning and by that evening all of our things are being transported to California.
“Let’s go ahead and head back.” Axe says to me, still not looking up to me, we haven’t spoken since last night when we were arguing. He carries the remainder of the items I wanted to bring with us on the drive and we shove them into the trunk of the SUV, sliding into it, and then we startthelong drive back home…
And then just like that we’re back to what we’re best at, shoving down feelings that are eventually going to bubble up and consume everyone.
