I really hope he’s picking up on all the things that are wrong with this conversation.
“Uh, yeah. I thought we were going to spend the nightalone.”
I wish I could sigh with relief. Cooper’s emphasis on the word alone makes me feel better. “No, baby, we don’t get to be alone. I miss my girl. I just want to snuggle her.”
“Okay. Well when do you think you’ll be home?”
“About twenty minutes. Think you could have her home by then? Maybe Wy could drop her on his way home?”
“Yeah, I’ll ask him. Might be easier if he can drop off at your house, then we’ll ride home together?”
“Yeah. I have to leave my car at home anyway.”
“Okay, perfect. I’ll see you soon, be safe?”
“Always, baby.”
I smash the button on the screen to hang up with him.
“That was sickening.” Jack scoffs without looking at me.
I don’t answer. He’s sickening. And I hate who he’s turned into.
Me:He’s with her. Be at her house in less than a minute.
Wyatt:How do you know?
Me:I just do. Can you trust me on this? You’ll need back up.
Wyatt:Going to talk to Chief now. Where’s Lily?
Me:Already herding her out the door for Ma. Or the first person I see at the inn.
Wyatt:Good. Let’s meet there. I don’t want a bunch of cruisers in her yard.
Me:Just hurry up.
Pulling down the drive of the farm, my nerves are absolutely fucking shot.
Logically, I know that Wyatt wouldn’t bring a million cruisers and leave them out in plain sight. But what if I was wrong and Cooper didn’t pick up on what I said?
“I’m not even shocked that Aggie and Tommy sent you to live out here in some fucking shack.” He stares at the farmhouse as we drive by.
“It’s not a shack. You’ve been inside so you should know. And at least it’s safe.”
“Was. It was safe. But not anymore, darling wife. Now you’re under my mercy, and I don’t have much to give you. Remember the deal. Don’t fuck this shit up.” He places the gun on his thigh, the metal glinting in the setting sun.
I’m almost to the house when he stops me. “Park over here.” He points behind Cooper’s truck and next to the woods. “You didn’t think I’d let you park with me right here out in the open did you?”
“No.” I pull over, parking where I’m instructed to.
“Hurry up and get my daughter.” He jabs the gun into my arm. “I’ll be watching you the whole time.”
With shaky hands, I climb out of the car. Circling Cooper’s truck, I see him on the front porch waiting for me.
I don’t waste any time I rush into his open arms.
He immediately pulls me in for a kiss. “Wearing. Wire. Where. Is. He?” he says between kisses without being loud enough for anyone else to hear.
