Chapter Fifteen
LILY
My heart is torn in two walking out of my house and away from the beautiful scene Apollo set.
For me.
I still have no idea what to do with all of his generosity. It feels good being on the receiving end but it also feels like I’m not doing enough for him in return. Does he expect anything in return? If he intends on spoiling me, that should tell me he doesn’t expect anything from me, right?
This is such a foreign feeling. It’s going to take some getting used to. But I’m willing to try. Even if it’s only for a little while. Before he has to go back to work.
“Lily,” Blake’s voice rumbles in my ear when he picks up my call as I’m climbing into the driver’s seat of my car.
“Hey, Blake. You have a second?”
“What’s up?”
“I assume you heard about Mr. Davis.” Stuff like that travels fast. It would surprise me more if he hasn’t.
“Yeah. Sad situation.”
“You think you can take an hour out of your evening and away from your girls tonight to quote the work that needs doing?”
“It’s not going to be cheap, from what I hear.”
“Thankfully, someone has made a generous donation.”
“Someone I know?” he asks in a way that makes me think he already knows the answers.
“Someone I hear your fists know pretty well.”
“Doesn’t really narrow it down, Lil.”
“That’s Lily? Give me the phone,” Parker squeaks getting louder with every word. Coming to take the phone from Blake, I’m guessing as it’s her who says clearly, “I’ve been dying to ask you how things are going with you and you’re new housemate.”
Blake helped distract the press but I thought that Apollo staying with me was supposed to be a secret.
“How do you know—?”
“Blue and Oliver brought Mason over to meet Kinsley this afternoon. My goodness, he’s growing so fast. Less than a month older than Kinsley and already almost twice her size.”
“Aw. Wish I could have seen them together.”
“I’ll send you pictures,” she chirps.
Because of course, my flighty baby sister didn’t think to send me any. She probably didn’t even think to take pictures. Can’t ever say Blue doesn’t live in the moment. That’s just about the only place you can find her. Thinking about the future has never been her strong suit. Probably why she told Parker and Blake about Apollo's new living situation.
“Thanks, Parker.”
“You’re welcome and don’t worry. Blake will be there in a bit. After dinner.”
“Of course.” Crap. I was so caught up in Apollo and delivering the good news to Mr. Davis, I completely forgot about eating.
As if he read my mind, Apollo knocks on my car window holding up a food container.
“I’m starting to wonder how you’ve survived this long without me,” he says when I roll the window down and take the food from him.
“Is that him?” Parker asks. “Say hi for us.”
