“Oh, yes,” Jonah says, smearing a two-tone line under my left eye, then mirroring it under my right.
“You have the lipsticks?” Jonah asks, tapping Levi’s shoulders. Levi hands two clear-capped tubes back to Jonah.
“Is this really necessary?” I ask.
“Yep.” Keaton holds my chin in his big hand and paints half of my lips purple and the other half gold like Levi’s face paint. “Perfect,” he says, sitting back, admiring his work.
Looking in the rearview mirror, I’m beyond impressed by how straight the dividing line between the colors is from my top to bottom lip. Impressive. There’s no way I could have done that well in a moving vehicle.
“Now that we’ve done our job. Tell us what you’re up to.” Keaton pulls the pencil out of my bun, letting my hair fall over my shoulders. He plucks a strand of purple plastic from Jonah’s purple wig and starts pulling my hair back up into a ponytail.
“It’s nothing.”
“Look at the blush in her cheeks,” Levi says, peering at me in the rearview mirror. “It’s definitely something.”
While Keaton fights with tying my hair up, I tell them all about my trial and error with Trent Brewer.
As I finish my story and Keaton finishes my hair, he grimaces. “You’re on your way to confess your love to Trent Brewer withus? After the things we said about his performance tonight?”
“Believe me, if I hadn’t needed the ride, you would have gotten an earful. Kind of hated you a little bit, to be honest. But it turns out you’re pretty nice guys.”
“Aw. She thinks we’re pretty,” Jonah says, and everyone laughs.
Trent has definitely made an impact on me for me to find that kind of comment funny.
Thinking about it makes my heart ache. I want to yell at Levi to run every red light to get us to the stadium right fucking now.
What good is it going to do to get there now or later? I don’t even know what the hell I’m going to do. Will they let me see him? In the team locker room? Not likely. And I’m not exactly the B and E or rule-breaking type.
But maybe these three are.
“Hey, guys. Could I ask you for one more favor?”
They match my energy. Each sporting a wicked grin even though they have no idea what I’m about to ask.
Now I regret never going to a Gamma Psi party. After all, they have a reputation. It will work out in my favor connecting with members of the notorious party house now. Nothing’s too crazy for them.
That’s what I need tonight. A little bit of crazy and a lot of luck.
Chapter ten
Trent
Afuckingtornrotatorcuff.
Thank fuck, it’s only a partial tear. Probably not career-ending but I’m out the rest of the season. Like this wasn’t already my worst game ever. Now I won’t even be able to make it right next week.
The ice strapped to my shoulder burns while I wait for the meds to kick in that the team’s doctor gave me. Lounging on a bench in the med annex of the field house, I stare at the ceiling, hating myself for not just fucking up the game and my shoulder, but the only chance I had to be with Meghan.
In my arrogance, I genuinely thought Meghan would come running back to me after Roberta talked to her.
I waited all week for Meghan to show up at our apartment or at practice or something. Anything. Every day that passed without even a text from her or Roberta, the pain in my heart spread. Seeping into everything I did. Including the game tonight. Neither my head nor my heart was in it. I’m paying the price for all of my mistakes. For all of my arrogance.
“Brewer. You have family here to see you,” one of the medical assistants says, poking his head in the door.
The drugs must be kicking in. I’m hearing things all wrong.
Thinking that sitting up will help me hear him better the second time, I swing my legs over the side of the bench and ask, “Did you say my family’s here?”
