“Damn it,” I growl as the door shuts between us.
I can’t believe she left. The only reason I agreed to meet Trent here was because it’s quiet, distraction-free and we wouldn’t be alone. This is not going to work. I should cancel or at least ask him to meet me someplace else.
It’s not too late. We could still get an hour in at the library before it gets overrun with club meetings.
Sitting on the couch under Roberta’s loft bed, I flip open my laptop and pull up the email from the agency.
Just as I finish typing Trent’s phone number into my phone to send him a text there’s a knock on the door.
It can’t be him. No way this guy would be on time, let alone early.
Or maybe… After all, this is Trent Brewer we’re talking about. Why be late when he can be early and have as much time as he can get to mess with me?
Desperate to get the message to Trent to meet me at the library instead, I type out my message on my way to answer the door.
Meghan: Need to move our session to the library. Meet you there.
I tap send and push all the air out of my puffed-up cheeks. Then suck it back in when the distinct chime of a phone receiving a message echoes in the hallway as I open the door.
“Fuck.”
“I mean… I paid to study but I’m open to negotiations.” An ornery smirk makes Trent’s hazel eyes glow.
I manage to keep my mouth shut but I can’t stop my nose from flaring.
“Sorry.” Trent raises his hands as if to surrender. “I promised myself I’d be on my best behavior but come on. You can’t dangle bait like that and expect me not to bite.”
If I bite my tongue any harder it’s going to bleed.
Trent leans closer, looking over my head. “I forgot how cramped the dorms are.”
This close, his cool, clean ocean scent fills my nose.
Of course, he smells amazing. His scent, his eyes, his smile, and not to mention his perfectly sculpted arms and shoulders threaten to wipe my memory of why I want nothing to do with this guy. He’s a selfish, arrogant, immature sociopath who probably isn’t satisfied just fucking a girl but has to fuck with her for his own sadistic pleasure like he does everyone else. He’s everything I don’t want. So why is hating him so fucking hard?
All the more reason why I can’t be alone with him tonight.
“Wait here while I get my things,” I say, pushing him back into the hallway.
His brow wrinkles. Confused but only for a second before that grin of his lights a mischievous fire in his eyes. “I get it. This is part of the negotiation. You need a little romance first? Dinner. Maybe a movie. Then we get down to business, yeah?” He winks when he saysbusiness.
While I hate the implication, my knees wobble with the smoldering look he gives me.
“Damn it, Trent. Just… Check your damn messages.”
Trent chuckles and pulls his phone out of his pocket as I turn around to pack my bag.
“Library? What’s wrong with your room?”
“Nothing. Now let’s go.” I make the mistake of putting my hand on his chest to push him back when he tries coming into my room again.
“Where’s your roommate, Teach?” The devil’s in his voice. He holds his ground as I push harder on his chest. If he can keep his feet under him with close to nine hundred pounds of defensive linemen trying to take him down, my hundred and eighty-pound ass doesn’t stand a chance.
“Not here.”
“You scared to be alone with me, Teach? Afraid you won’t be able to resist my rakish charm?”
A laugh bursts from my chest. “Ha! You have all the charm of a cheese sandwich, Trent Brewer.”
