Now, the question I have to answer is, when to tell her? At our next session or now?

I stand and tell Hudson, “Wish me luck.”

“You’re going to tell her now?”

“It’s going to be the same response no matter what. Might as well get it over with. Get through the grief before our next game.”

Eyes wide and shoulders raised, Hudson shakes his head. “Alright then. Good fucking luck, man.”

I’m definitely going to need it.

Chapter seven

Meghan

“Christalmighty,Meg.You’regoing to make the entire floor deaf,” Roberta says, turning down my stereo when she walks into our room.

Blasting music is the only thing I’ve been able to do to distract my brain from thinking about Trent and concentrate on my studies. But it only works about half the time. And not at all last night.

In the dark, with my earbuds in, my hand under the covers, and between my legs, I couldn’t stop imagining what it would have felt like to kiss him. Wondering if I had kissed him where we would have ended up. Would he have skipped practice? Taken me back to my room? Stripped me naked and pinned me to the couch? It wasn’t until I came, silently so as not to wake up Roberta, that I admitted to myself I would have let him.

Not just because he’s a hot, superstar athlete but because during our entire tutoring session, he listened. He took our time seriously. He tookmeseriously. Proved he’s not at all the immature boy I thought he was but the kind and respectful man I’ve been looking for.

“Hey. Earth to Meghan.” Roberta waves her hand in front of my face.

“Sorry. It’s been a long day.”

“It’s about to get longer,” Roberta says, turning when there’s a knock on our open door.

“Trent. What are you doing here?” I tug on my ratty T-shirt and smooth my hands down the front of my sleep shorts. When I catch a glimpse of my wild hair in the mirror on the shelf above my desk, I snatch a pencil off of my desk and wind it up in a bun on top of my head.

Why did he have to show up now? I’m usually so well put together. If he ever wanted a chance to mess with me, my current appearance gives him plenty to work with.

“Umm…” Trent purses his lips and holds a hand out to Roberta. “What’s your name?”

“Whatever you want it to be.” Roberta doesn’t hide the desire in her voice. She really does have a weakness for athletes. Boys in general really.

“This is Roberta. My roommate,” I answer for her.

Roberta continues to make googley eyes at Trent even though his focus is one hundred percent on me now. “Roberta. Could you give us a minute?”

Roberta snaps her head, looking at me with wide eyes and mouth, “Oh. My. God.” She steps toward me then, and whispers, “Get it, girl.”

“Shut up,” I whisper back and lead her toward the door, shoving her backpack into her arms.

“I’m gonna head to the library. Be gone forhours.” She winks at Trent over my shoulder before I push her out of the room and shut the door in her face.

“Sorry about her,” I say.

Trent shrugs. “I like her.”

I lean back on the door, letting out a heavy sigh. “Then why are you here with me?”

“I don’t like her as much as I like you.”

“Haha. Seriously, though. Why are you here?” I cross the room, picking up clothes and books. I’d have cleaned up if I knew he was coming. Or rather made Roberta clean up. Most of the mess is hers.

Gentle hands grip my upper arms to stop me. Trent holds me still for a second before taking the things I hug against my chest and setting them on my desk chair next to us.
