“Ha ha. I wouldn’t run off without you.”
Oh. That’s a nice thought.
“I’d just get lost and get eaten by a different bear.”
Right. So, just a self-preserving thought.
“Let’s get on with it. We’ve got tents to set up.”
“Tents? How many did you bring?”
“Just one,” I say, finally taking some much needed steps forward.
“So it’s just the one tent then, Jack.”
“What?” I whirl around as fast as two backpacks will let me. “You didn’t bring a tent?”
“No.” Her cheeks turn a delectable shade of red. “Was I supposed to?” she whispers.
“Nope. I always double bunk with my clients in my one man tent.”
“Oh shit.” She’s nibbling on her lip. “I didn’t know. We can just go back.”
“Never mind. We’ll make it work. I can sleep in the hammock.”
“No, I’ll sleep in the—” she stops herself because we all know she’s not going to offer that, no matter how polite she is.
“Yup.” Not worth a fight. “That’s what I thought. Let’s go.”
So we head up the mountain to hell.
Chapter 4
Emmerson
“Comfy?”Jackasks.WhileI sit—spoiled—in the hammock, I watch Big Foot (AKA Jack) work around our campsite. Ya. I don’t know how I missed it before, but any sighting the Jensons have claimed over the years was probably just Jack walking around in a fur coat. He’s massive. I mean, I climbed the man earlier today. Like he was the mountain. I still can’t believe I did that.
So of course I eat my emotions. Another snickerdoodle for me? Yes, please.
“Are you eating a snickerdoodle without me?” Jack asks wryly.
He’s setting up our tent. Actually, he has a super fancy tent and I guess he’s already done. He must have set it up in like two seconds. That man knows his shit. God, he’s sexy. Way too sexy for me. I had to put up walls on that right away so he didn’t break my heart. Years ago, when Georgie and I first became friends at school and I met Jack, I told her I only ever saw him as a friend. No matter how many times the girl asked me, I reassured her of my friendly vibes. I have to reassure myself of those vibes now too as I observe the size of the one man tent. Jack is one man, but he’s larger than the average man. So it’s going to be a tight squeeze if we have to fit in there together. Which—I’m not going to lie to you—I’m kind of hoping for.
I mean, for my book. It’d be great to have firsthand experience of a one bed situation. That’s all I meant.
“Ya. Why? You want one?” I hold out a snickerdoodle. The most delicious cookie I’ve ever had by the way, so me offering to share is really saying something.
“Hell ya I want one. I can’t believe you’ve been holding out on me.” He lifts the hem of his shirt to wipe the sweat from his brow.
Oh.
My.
God.
Those abs. I think my heart just stuttered. Is that a thing? But those abs. I want to lick him. I’ve never wanted to lick anyone but Jack. Ugh. Another secret just stuffed inside of me. There are too many at this point. I’m bound to burst.
“I grabbed some cookies from Pie in the Sky after I got my latte.”
