I quieted, my heart aching.

She let her finger fall away.

“Rosalie?”

“Yeah?”

“It’s a big ask, but will you sign those divorce papers with Anson?”

She sighed. “No.”

I knew she’d say that. I just had my work cut out for me.

She winced.

“What’s wrong?”

“My ankle. It’s aching again.”

“Let’s get you out and back to bed. I can put a movie on. Anything you want.”

She gave me a genuine smile at that, and it was all I needed to keep going.

ROSALIE

Cole got me back to my bed, being a complete gentleman and never once trying to sneak a peek at me.

He was the same, but he was different. Sure, he had impulse issues, but I really felt like he was trying.

It was easier for me to wear another nightgown he had for me. It looked a lot like the purple one I had, only it was pink.

“I can make us pizza rolls in the microwave,” he said. “Then we can watch a movie together. If you want. Or we can do anything you want. I have cards and board games. I can get us takeout?—”

“Pizza rolls are fine. Are they cheese?”

“Yes. I would never burden you with combination or pepperoni.”

I genuinely laughed at that, which made him grin.

He was so beautiful, but my god, what a nightmare his emotions were. But then again, his sweet side Ellis definitely inherited.

Well, his bad emotions were a nightmare. If he could just learn to control himself…

I watched as he quickly put pizza rolls onto a plate before popping them into the microwave.

“I, uh, got some cake,” he said, going to his bag and pulling out a plastic container with a slice of chocolate cake in it.

“I don’t eat cake,” I replied immediately.

I expected him to be crestfallen, but he nodded.

“I don’t either. Not anymore. It’s for things that bring joy. I haven’t felt that feeling in a long time.”

His words crushed my heart.

“Maybe we could have some.” I rested my hand on his arm as he went to stand.
