I eat and watch the phone, itching for Bethy to read and reply.
Bethy: I’m okay. Someone asked me if I knew where you were. I think they are on to you, Vicky. My brother is watching me closely, so I’ll delete this message. Don’t worry about me, keep safe.
I hand Jack the phone and thank him. But he’s looking at me questioningly. “Victoria, if you need help, tell me. Even if you don’t want the club to know I’ll help you.”
“I’ll think about it, Jack, but thank you.”
“Chaos is prior military, as are many in the club. If you need to be safe, they will keep you safe. You don’t have to live in fear; just tell them. I had to tell them my story, and you can do the same. I know trust doesn’t just happen, but I can tell you firsthand that these are good people who have the ability to keep you safe. No matter what, or who, is chasing you.”
“Thanks, Jack. I will think about it.”
I lay back and close my eyes, considering if I should share what is happening or just run again!
