I stepped back.
“Again.”
Something sparked in her eyes.
Finally.
She was starting to fight back.
Chapter 37
Seph
I watched Dev from across the clearing.
We were taking a break. Dev had chosen a spot on the rocks overlooking the valley.
The day was already fading and the air had cooled. It felt nice on my face.
I grabbed a bottle of water and walked over, handing it to him.
“Here.”
“Thanks,” he said, but his gaze was far away.
I hated myself for caring, but I couldn’t help it.
“Are you okay Dev?”
He turned to me and offered a small smile. “I’m fine.”
“You don’t seem fine.”
“Don’t I?” he asked softly, turning away again.
I sat beside him. He tensed slightly.
I let the silence settle.
“I was thinking about my dad. He wants to see me.”
“When?”
“Tomorrow. He wants me to come to dinner.”
“Will you go?”
“I have to. Elliot said so.”
“Why?”
“Because he thinks Dominic Lightwood will be there.”
I sat back. “Dominic, again. He’s everywhere lately,” I sighed.
“Do you know him well?”
“Well enough. He’s my father’s friend. He used to come over to the house a lot. He’s allergic to beets, you know. Dad – Gideon - found out the hard way,” I let out a short laugh.
