Kinsley reaches over the arm of the chair and squeezes my hand briefly.
“If someone had told me I’d marry a mafia boss, I would’ve laughed in their face.”
A soft smile touches her lips.
“My mother was dying, and I needed access to unlimited cash. Nick found my file at the Wife for Hire Agency, and somehow that impossible situation became my life. We have a newborn baby. Trust me the road was bumpy getting here.”
Then she looks at me.
“I’m the Donna now. Soon you’ll be one too.”
I jump to my feet and begin pacing.
“I tried to kill him this morning.”
Her eyes widen.
“I was desperate. I poisoned his breakfast. My plan failed because his bodyguard tested the food first.”
She stares at me.
“Serenity, you entered a deal to marry him and have his children. You know how the mafia world works better than me.”
I sigh.“I know. How did I think I’d ever escape him, anyway?”
“I thought you said you loved him?”
“I do. Love isn’t enough. My past is about to catch up with me. I might not be alive in a week after I go after my enemies. I’m making peace with that.” I slip my fingers through my wavy hair.
“I’ve made proper arrangements,” I whisper.
“You know Nico will never let you go to war alone.”
“I know. That’s why I was trying to find another way out. If Nico was dead,” I choke out. My body shakes uncontrollably.
“Dad would get his territory back.”
My voice breaks.
“But when it came time to do it... I couldn’t.”
I wipe at my tears.
“I only gave him enough poison to make him sick.”
I laugh bitterly.
“He found out. He was furious. And then he kissed me.”
I cover my face.
“We are so unbelievably fucked up. We kill people for each other.”
Kinsley walks over and stops in front of me.
Her smile is warm. “Then stop running.”
I look up at her.
