“Why?”Now I was curious about her work situation.
“Probably because I work on two or three forensic accounts at a time.”
“What?That doesn’t seem right.”
“I’m very good at what I do.It also depends on the level of forensics they need.”
“And the one for us?”
“This one is more detailed and complicated than I thought it would be.Especially since Rustic isn’t following normal practices.Which circles me back how you came to work there.”
“After my stint with the firm, I was looking for a new job and came across an advertisement for Fantasies, Inc., I was intrigued.John interviewed me, and two days later, I had the job.”
“You impressed him.”
I shrugged.“I don’t know about that, but I was thrilled to get in at the start of the company.”I shifted in my seat.“At first, it was just me and another person. We put in some long days.”
“Wasn’t that why you left the firm?”
“Part of it.With FI, it was more a labor of love, not forced overtime.John was pretty specific about us not working too much.I found it all exciting, getting in on the ground floor, and was having fun.”I continued to tell her about the first year, setting up the company and how everyone else came on board.“Marcus is the latecomer. He came in about two years ago when Research and Development was added to the company.”
“How come?”
“R&D wasn’t as big of a need in the first couple of years. We managed with what we had.Eventually, John saw the need and contacted Marcus. They go back a long way.”
“And that’s how Marcus met Cassie.”
“Yeah.Marcus developed a thing for Cassie, but she resisted him.I don’t know the whole story, but apparently, they spent a long weekend together which cemented their relationship.”
“You’re not expecting to cement our relationship this weekend, are you?.”Her voice was soft.
I wished, but I wasn’t going to push her for a commitment.“No, I don’t expect this weekend to be anything but time away for both of us.But Marcus and Cassie danced around each other for a long time.We all saw the sexual tension the minute those two were in the same room together.I don’t know what Marcus did to make her agree to that weekend, but they’re happy together.”
“They are. What about Emma and Asher?”
“Like you, Emma was hired as a special contractor to help Asher with some new apps to use and to shore up our international arrangements.”There was a lot more than that, but nothing that related to this discussion.“Emma did such a good job, John offered her a job with us.And the rest is history.”
“Hmmm.”
“I can almost hear the mental wheels turning.”
“It’s just interesting, that’s all.”
I’d let it go for now.“What else do you want to know?”
“When I was brought on board, Miles mentioned that attrition isn’t a big problem.”
“It’s not.John has worked hard to create a safe and enjoyable environment for the employees.”
“The key cards where you can get meals, coffee, and snacks.”
“That’s one of the perks.”
“It must cost the company a fortune.”
“Ah, that math brain is going strong.Believe it or not, it’s not that much. The employees don’t abuse it, and it has created better productivity across the board.Even in my department.”
“About Finance. How many accountants do you have?”
