We turned again, going down a road made for only one car. On one side, there were marshlands. Eventually, the road ended, and in front of us was a small cabin made of cypress logs. Vines crept down the sides of the cabin, curling around the posts of a small covered porch.

I sat in the truck looking all around. Looking at the cabin. To the left, deeper into the woods, I could see water reflecting off the sun. Quinnlyn had gotten out, walked around, and pulled my door open. He reached his hand out to me, but I ignored it and slowly got out of the truck, holding onto the door instead. He let out a loud sigh, but I wasn’t paying it any mind.

“Let’s go see how much they got done,” he said, then motioned toward the door.

“You lead the way, you know where you’re going,” I said.

“I don’t think you can get lost in there,” he said.

“I walk much slower than you anyway, no need to wait for me,” I said.

He made a low grumble. I ignored that, too, but he continued walking behind me. I made it to the front door and pushed it open. The door was at the center of the rectangle-shaped cabin. When I walked in, there was a small living area and kitchen to the left. To the right, there was a small hallway. I turned left into the living area. There were three chairs—two wingbacks and a wooden rocker. They were facing the small wood fireplace.

The kitchen was pretty much a part of the living room. On the far wall, there was a counter with a stove, sink, and refrigerator. There was a small circular table with two chairs against the interior wall. I stepped back toward the door. Across from the door was a washer and dryer unit.

Next to them was a door. I pushed it open, and there was a small bathroom, almost similar to Lina’s bathroom. There was a smallvanity with a little sink, a toilet next to it, and the bath-shower next to it. I stepped out. Quinnlyn was standing in the living room, staring at the fireplace. At the end of the hall, there was a door. I pushed it open. There was a queen-sized bed and a dresser on the far wall. One bed. Two people. One bed. I stood there frozen. How was this going to work?

Chapter 13

I glanced at the bed. There was no couch, only three chairs, and one bed. This was fantastic. I turned around and walked back into the living room. Quinnlyn walked back into the room from outside, carrying bags.

“How are we doing this sleeping thing?” I asked.

“What do you mean?” he asked nonchalantly.

“There is only one bed,” I said.

“You’ll sleep on the bed, you need the rest,” he said.

“And you?”

“I can sleep on the floor out here,” he said.

“I guess…”

“Do you want me to sleep in the bed with you?”

“No, I don’t,” I said.

“Then that settles that. There are blankets and a sleeping mat in one of the bags,” he said.

“I’m feeling a little tired. I’ma go rest,” I said, before turning around and walking back into the bedroom.

I climbed into bed, lying on my right side. My hand instinctively moved to my stomach. The reality hit me again: he was gone. No more little kicks, no more punches. Tears and sobs poured out of me. I gasped for air in between cries. Why did this happen to me? What did I do to deserve this? Why me? Sleep took me under.

Daxyn’s body contorted. His head tilted to the sky, and a howl emerged from him. His arms twisted unnaturally, bones shifting beneath his skin—A giant wolf was standing there, where Daxyn once stood.

Our baby was in his mouth, the way the wolf carries its young. I screamed at the top of my lungs.

“Zalayuh!” Quinnlyn shouted.

My eyes shot open. Eyes wide. I glared at him.

“Oh, my god. Oh, my fucking lord!” I shouted.

“What? What’s wrong?”

I lurched out of the bed, every aching part of me screaming. I backed into the far corner away from him.
