—Elemental Mastery IV: The Covenant of Fire

February arrives at Whittaker, cold and unforgiving, its often-unpredictable weather torn between heavy winter storms and light, fluffy bluebird days. The lake is now completely frozen over. Footsteps vanish instantly beneath a fresh dusting of snow, only to reappear again as the harsh wind scours the ground with icy teeth.

When the school cancels Friday and Monday classes ahead of a storm rolling in, Noa suggests we escape to Elesmere for the extended weekend. I say yes easily—too easily—because the timing is perfect. Gavrail and I finally have a window to searchfor the book. And, because the universe has an impeccably ironic sense of timing, it also happens to be Valentine’s Day.

Elesmere in winter is a dream painted in frost and candlelight.

Snow clings to every eave and branch like spun sugar, and the trees stand frozen in quiet reverence, their limbs glittering with crystal teardrops from last night’s thaw. The cobbled streets are swept clean and dusted in white. Bells tinkle above storefronts—warm, soft notes that dance in the cold air, while fairy lights weave between garlands of pine and gold bells that are strung up around the square. In the center, a frozen fountain glistens beneath an archway of lanterns.

Noa drives Finn, Ryan, and me in his car. Other students take the Whittaker shuttle from campus, the one I took the first time I came here. We arrive around lunchtime, and I spot Ink & Ether’s swinging sign—CLOSED EARLY, posted in the window. My stomach dips, disappointment rushing in.

Noa brushes my hand like he can feel the tension in me when I point it out. “They always close early on Fridays. Don’t worry, Cel, you can go tomorrow morning.”

Our room at the Village Inn overlooks the town square—a romantic corner suite with a sloped ceiling, a four-poster bed draped in rich reds and maroons, and an iron hearth glowing with dampened embers. Wisteria vines are carved into the headboard, and a small table near the window is already set with a vase holding a single ivory rose.

“It’s not the Ritz or the St. Regis,” Noa murmurs against my neck, arms circling my waist from behind, “but I wanted to bring you somewhere that felt a little like home, and a little magick.”

I turn toward him as he presses a small velvet box into my palm.

Inside, nestled in midnight velvet, is a gold charm bracelet:tiny golden seashells, a sapphire wave curling around a single pearl, and at the center—a golden mermaid, her tail arched in a delicate swirl, one diamond eye catching the firelight.

I blink, momentarily stunned. “It’s beautiful,” I whisper.

“I wanted to give you something… that felt like you,” Noa says, his voice quieter now. “Not just your power. Butyou. I thought it would look nice with your ring.”

My throat tightens, a knot forming there that I attempt to swallow. Unsure what he would think if he knew who the ring was actually from. I don’t even know why I don’t tell him. Maybe because it’s my past. Maybe because what it represents matters more than who gave it to me—at least, that’s what I try to tell myself. Once my most prized possession, now it’s also a reminder of what I can survive.

He helps me fasten the bracelet to my wrist, and my heart clenches from the way he’s looking at me—with love, reverence, promise… and something hungrier beneath.

The velvet box slips from my fingers, forgotten, as I lean in to claim his mouth.

The kiss is fire—the kind that leaves no room for breath, no space between us but the urgent press of skin on skin. His hands trace my waist, my ribs, the curve of my back, pulling me back toward the bed until I’m straddling him, the world outside—the bells, the drifting snow—vanishing. His hands slide under my sweater, my shirt, dragging them up and over my head.

The afternoon light gilds the shadows that curve over Noa’s jaw, his shoulders, the line of muscle that flexes as he holds me in place.

“Noa,” I whisper, the word half prayer, half warning as I look into those impossibly blue-green eyes. “I love you.”

His grin is all molten heat as his lips find the hollow of my throat, teeth grazing, tongue soothing. I rock against him, heat pooling deep inside me as I feel him—hard, straining against the fabric between us.

Clothes vanish under frantic hands, leaving only my bra and panties—just thin strips of lace against bare skin. He turns us as he lays me back on the bed, climbing over me with a heat that sears and shelters all at once. His body cages mine as his fire magick hums against my skin, like lying beneath a summer sun too close to the earth. I arch into it, craving more, and he answers—pressing, claiming, yet careful, as if I am at once his equal and his undoing.

His lips move slowly, pausing to worship every bit of exposed skin before continuing their downward path, tracing languid kisses on my shoulders, my ribs, my stomach, then back up again.

“I want to try something… if you’ll let me.” His voice is gravel; his eyes are bright.

I look up at him questioningly.

“Do you trust me?” The way he says it, the way he looks at me, makes heat lick up my spine.

I nod.

Suddenly I feel warmth bloom at the edges of the lace—gentle, precise. Not pain. Not burning. Just a playful flare, like his magick is teasing the fabric apart more than destroying it. The threads loosen into ember-light, disappearing in a whisper of ash that makes me gasp. Leaving me completely naked and at his mercy.

He chuckles at the sound, utterly pleased with himself, a cocky grin on his face as he looks down at his handiwork, eyes dark with desire. He moves lower, positioning his head between my thighs.

I gasp as his mouth finds my center. Maddening fire-laced circles contrast with the cool air of the room, making me cry out against him as his strong hands pin my hips to the bed. I come apart under his mouth, trembling and weightless, my hands finding their way into his chestnut-dark hair.

I tug him up and he moves to kiss me again, and I taste myself on him. I can’t wait anymore.
