I don’t know if I’m ready for that yet, but I appreciate the option.

It is the very least I can do.

Exhaling, I stare at that icon for too long and finally, I minimize the top tab, putting the option out of accidental opening range and heading into my kitchen panel to reheat my leftovers instead of obsessing over it.

I’m about to eat dinner.

Do you ever go to Klkx?

No, but I have gotten it delivered.

I didn’t know they delivered.

They don’t.

I look at those words and consider the information icon again.

The answers are right there.

Maybe I’ll open Pandora’s Box tomorrow.

Maybe not.

CHAPTER 1

It’s a Sirin day!

I haven’t met a client I didn’t like yet, but waking up and knowing that I’m going in tohimmakes every morning a little bit brighter.

Stretching and twisting in my sheets, I make a happy little sound, and the room’s lights turn on as if that was a command.

It’s a glitch that started a few days ago and I’m going to have to put in a request to station maintenance to get it fixed, but the idea of someone in here—even if it means I don’t wake up because sleep-babble turned on the lights—doesn’tmake me happy.

Kita’s the only one I’ve let in and she doesn’t like my cozy little closet, so I normally have it all to myself whenever I want to be alone.

There are three messages on my comm when I pluck it from the nightstand. I read Kita’s first. It’s a time, location, and “tell no one.” I chuckle as I send her back a “my lips are sealed”. Her response is a picture of a knife, and think about how it sounds like a drug deal in the curt back and forth.

The other two are from Sirin.

I snuggle down in my comforter when I open that app, even though I know I need to get up and get ready.

Good morning. I know you’re still asleep, but a crisis has called me into the office and I wanted to send this so you’d have it when you woke up.

Our appointment is the only thing I have to look forward to today.

Poor baby.

I slide out of bed like my bones are made of jelly until they hit the floor, and I tap out my response as I start my quick morning routine.

I love waking up to messages from you. But you already knew that

I hope the crisis was easily averted

The station didn’t blow up, so, I would call it a win

Was that a possibility?

No, not this time
