The Narrative
Vampyrs exist, but not in the way you think. They live in their own cities, their own societies, because of their differences. They have stations and status levels like the humans. For vampyrs, these stations are known as the high blood born, mid blood born, and low blood born. High blood borns are often referred to as the aristocrats, the ones of higher society, higher expectations, and an entitlement of what is the best. Mid blood borns are known as suits because they function better as the middle man in the professional world. And the low blood borns are the worker, the busy bees, the overworked ones doing the dirty work in the trenches, so-to-speak.
Not only is there a difference in living styles among the different levels, but even their physique differentiates them. High blood borns are bigger, taller, and with the men, sometimes broader in physique. Mid blood borns are more medium builds and height. Low blood borns are usually smaller in body type, less weight, less outward strength. However, due to the labor the low blood borns engage in for work purposes, they are actually much stronger than their opposites: the high blood borns.
It is considered an honor to match to one’s blood partner. Once matched, you are referred to as a blood wife or blood husband. This is done by a blood tasting test. Once a woman becomes of age at 18 years old, she begins to offer a fresh vial of her blood once a year to be used in the tastings from the Facility. The Facility houses the blood samples until a woman is matched to her blood husband or blood wife. Once that occurred, the vials are discarded and the woman no longer provided a sample. She is quite literally off the market. The men decide when they want to start the tastings, but it usually occurs by the time they are25 years old, at the latest. Vampyr society holds it sacred that once you have matched with your blood partner, you are loyal til death. Though, there are some that toe the line with a mistress.
Vampyrs are more human-like than you realize. They eat normal food, drink normal fluids, have the same anatomy as humans. The differences come after the blood match. True, vampyrs do drink blood before the match, but it is usually human blood that has been donated and treated. Human blood must be clean in order to drink it and sustain a vampyr. A vampyr can drink human blood once a week and maintain a normal way of life. However, once a vampyr has tasted his match’s blood, the need for blood is more intense and more frequent. The longest one can go without their match’s blood once matched is four days before changes begin to occur. At that time, the vampyr becomes weaker and weaker. The vampyr struggles with basic functioning such as thinking, walking, moving. By the seventh day, the vampyr starts to become more animalistic in nature. Angry, growling, hissing, snarling, and aggressive. Once the vampyr reaches the last stage in decompensation, usually by day ten, there is no going back. The vampyr must be put out of their misery or they become a danger at large. There are only two ways to kill a vampyr: beheading or ripping the heart directly out of the chest.
However, there is compromise within this cycle. A vampyr can drink the blood of another vampyr to sustain life, even after a match has been formed. It is not the same as a blood match, but it can keep a vampyr alive longer. This has occurred very rarely in society, but it has happened. Such as if a partner dies, or there is a separation, short term or long term, in which one partner needs blood to survive. It is frowned upon in society as the one who is not a match is designated a blood whore for life. It is a very derogatory label to hold, shunning the blood whore in society.
As with any society, or community of people, there are those that rebel, though quietly, against the rules. These vampyrs are labeled as dirty bloods. Dirty bloods have no problem drinking from other vampyrs, whether for pleasure or because it is simply against the rules. Drinking the blood of an unmatched though is not as enjoyable as the blood partner. Some have compared it to as drinking the sweetest wine to a cheap knock off.
When a vampyr feeds off the blood of his match, it is calledtaking the blood or the taking. Only one partner drinks during the taking. They are the dominant partner known as thesupreme. The submissive partner, therecessive, can take blood, but it is not necessary as it is with thesupreme. Therecessiveprovides the blood, the sustenance, for thesupreme. When the blood is taken, therecessivebecomes lethargic with euphoria, and is practically unable to function for awhile afterwards. Thesupremecan take as much as he, or she, wants. There is a primal trigger that tells the taker when to stop, or the partner would bleed the bride dry. Under the best circumstances, being intimate with the partner during, or after the taking of the blood, is the most euphoric experience for both. This is a guaranteed time a baby can be bred as well.
Although vampyr society has a method to its ways, sometimes there are those who rebel, quietly, to these ways, for reasons all their own. And two of these rebels come in the form of an aristocrat named Devareaux and a station-riser named Onyx.
