“Not every woman is that vain.”

“Most are.”

“Then you are associating with the wrong women.”

Brixton picked up his drink. “You can judge me all you want, but you know I speak the truth.”

As Charles took a sip of his drink, he saw Mr. Audley approach the table with a smile on his face. “What a pleasant surprise to run into both of you.”

“Would you care to join us?” Brixton asked, gesturing towards an empty chair.

“I will, but only for a moment,” Audley said. “I am meeting my father-in-law for a few drinks.”

Charles placed his glass on the table. “How are you enjoying being married?”

“It has been only a few months, but I would highly recommend it,” Audley replied.

Brixton leaned back in his chair. “That is good to hear, because I have decided it is time for me to take a wife.”

“Who do you have in mind?” Audley asked.

“Miss Whiston,” Brixton revealed.

Audley lifted his brow. “You may have to rethink your selection.”

“Why is that?” Brixton asked.

With a glance over his shoulder, Audley said, “Lord Featherstone just placed a bet in the book that he would marry Miss Whiston by the end of the Season.”

“Why would he do such a thing?” Brixton questioned.

Audley shrugged. “It is no secret that Lord Featherstone wants to marry, but his reputation thus far has prevented him from doing so.”

“That is because he is a rake,” Charles pointed out.

“Precisely, but he has set his cap at Miss Whiston,” Audley shared.

“How much was the bet?” Brixton asked.

“A thousand pounds,” Audley revealed.

Brixton frowned. “That is a rather large sum of money.”

“You could always bet against him,” Audley suggested.

“No,” Brixton said with a shake of his head. “I am not foolish enough to gamble away my money.”

“You only have to pay if you lose,” Audley pointed out.

Brixton took a sip of his drink. “I’m not going to let Featherstone’s ridiculous bet sway me. I will continue pursuing Miss Whiston, and we will let her decide who she wants to marry.”

“Women generally swoon over Featherstone,” Audley remarked.

“Only the foolish ones,” Brixton stated.

“I won’t disagree with you there.” Audley turned his attention towards the door and rose. “If you will excuse me, my father-in-law just arrived.”

“What is your plan to win Miss Whiston’s favor?” Charles asked as Audley walked off.
