“Why do you suppose that was?”
“Lord Bristol made it known that they had been hoping for a more auspicious match for Marjorie,” John said.
“Regardless, this is a time for rejoicing,” Colin attempted, “since you are engaged.”
John looked heavenward. “I just wish I knew what Marjorie was thinking.”
“You could always write her,” he suggested. “It is perfectly acceptable for a man to write his betrothed.”
“I suppose that could work.”
“If you would like, you could have a rider personally deliver it to Lady Marjorie in London.”
John grinned. “I’m afraid Mother made it rather clear that all the servants are previously occupied.”
“I’m sure she will make an exception, given the circumstances.”
With a bob of his head, John said, “I think a letter would work brilliantly.”
“Perhaps you can have the letter delivered with flowers, as well.”
“That would be a nice touch.”
Colin saw his gamekeeper approaching him on foot. He put his hand up in greeting, and Burton did the same.
“I hope I am not intruding,” Burton said.
“You are doing no such thing.”
Burton came to a stop a few feet from him. “I’m afraid I bear bad news.”
“Which is?”
“We found proof that the poacher has struck again,” Burton said. “We found some blood on the ground and saw evidence of a carcass being dragged a short distance.”
“Dragged?”
Burton nodded. “Yes, milord,” he replied. “We have reason to believe that someone killed one of your deer.”
“Blazes,” Colin muttered.
“I have already taken the liberty of notifying the constable of the poaching, and he has assured me that he will make some inquiries.”
“You were right to do so.”
“I can assure you that me and my men will not rest until we find this poacher,” Burton said firmly.
“I appreciate that.”
Burton acknowledged John by the tipping of his head. “It is good to see you, Mr. Notley,” he greeted.
“Likewise,” John replied. “How is your family?”
“They are well, and I do thank you for asking.” Burton shifted his gaze back towards Colin. “I will be sure to notify you right away once we catch the poacher.”
“Thank you,” Colin said.
“Good day to you both,” Burton responded before he turned and walked away.
