“Yet Harriet was rather adamant that she had never visited that apartment.”

“That is odd.”

“Furthermore, her explanations always seemed too convenient,” Greydon expressed. “She claims that she had convinced Phineas to stop the divorce proceedings, despite him knowing she was having an affair.”

“It sounds as if she were the one that benefited the most from his death.” Mr. Westcott hesitated before saying, “Other than you, of course. Upon his death, you became your father’s heir.”

Greydon put his hand up. “This is not the life that I envisioned for myself. I would much rather have my brother alive.”

Mr. Westcott nodded. “I believe you.”

“Good,” Greydon said. “That will save us a considerable amount of time.”

“But why do you need us?” Mr. Westcott asked.

“I need you to witness Harriet’s confession so we can exonerate Lady Eugenie,” Greydon explained.

Mr. Westcott’s brow shot up. “And you expect Lady Rushcliffe to just confess to the murder with us there?”

“I am still working through the particulars,” Greydon admitted. “But I will have a plan in place soon enough.”

Mr. Moore interjected, “I hate to be a naysayer, but what if Lady Rushcliffe doesn’t confess?”

“Then we are out of options and Lady Eugenie will die for a murder she didn’t commit,” Greydon responded.

“How do you know she didn’t commit the murder and she is just playing you for a fool?” Lord Roswell asked.

Greydon shifted his gaze towards Lord Roswell. “I was once where you are now, doubting Lady Eugenie’s intentions, but I could see the truth in her eyes. Her whole intention was to protect her sister, who she suspects murdered my brother.”

“Why would she suspect that?” Lord Roswell questioned.

“Lady Eugenie went to Phineas’ apartment to retrieve her sister and try to convince my brother to stop his dalliance with her,” Greydon shared. “But, when she arrived, he had a knife sticking out of his chest.”

Mr. Westcott looked unsure. “Have you told the coroner of your suspicions?”

“I did, but he has dismissed them,” Greydon stated. “His main concern is closing this case with as little fanfare as possible.”

“That doesn’t surprise me, especially since Sir David has political aspirations,” Lord Roswell acknowledged.

“Precisely,” Greydon said. “Besides, he has ordered me off this case.”

“Why am I not surprised that you didn’t listen to him?” Lord Roswell joked.

“All I care about is that justice is done for my brother,” Greydon said.

Mr. Moore gave him a smug look. “Are you sure this isn’t about you trying to win Lady Enid’s favor?”

“It may have started about that, but it has evolved over time,” Greydon replied. “I love Lady Enid, but I am not doing this for her. I am doing this because it is the right thing to do.”

Lord Roswell bobbed his head. “I am not surprised in the least,” he remarked. “It was evident that you held her in high regard when we saved her from her mad husband.”

“Was I that obvious?” Greydon asked.

“Just to me,” Lord Roswell replied.

Mr. Westcott gave him an amused look. “You will have to ignore my friend since he is a hopeless romantic.”

“I am not,” Lord Roswell responded. “I just want to believe that love trumps all.”
