“I have no complaints,” she said.
Greydon took his hand and cupped her right cheek. “I am nothing special, of this I am sure, but my love for you is correct and perfect. I want all of you, forever, every day. You and me… every day.”
“If you are sure,” she said.
“I have never been so sure of anything in my life.”
Knowing she couldn’t deny him any longer, she said, “Then yes, I will marry you. A hundred thousand times, yes.”
Greydon’s face broke out into a boyish grin. “Had I known getting shot would have brought us together, I would have gotten shot much sooner.”
Enid realized that she didn’t even know the circumstances about how he was shot. She had been so distracted by making sure that Greydon was all right. “How did you manage to get shot?”
“Lady Charlotte shot me,” he replied, “but only after she confessed to Phineas’ murder.”
“She killed him?”
Greydon nodded. “Yes, but Harriet played a hand in his murder, too. She manipulated Lady Charlotte into doing it.”
“Please say they aren’t going to get away with murder.”
Greydon sobered. “Unfortunately, Lady Charlotte was killed after she shot me, but Harriet is at Newgate. She was arrested for attempted murder since she had been poisoning Phineas with arsenic,” he revealed. “Lord Roswell, Mr. Moore and Mr. Westcott were hiding in Phineas’ apartment and overheard their confessions. They came out of hiding just as Lady Charlotte pointed her pistol at me and they all discharged their weapons at her.”
“Does this mean Lady Eugenie will be released soon?”
“Yes, Sir David has to process the paperwork, which is something that he is not thrilled about, but he couldn’t justify keeping Lady Eugenie in Newgate any longer.”
Enid smiled. “Thank you for what you did for Lady Eugenie.”
“I am pleased for Lady Eugenie, but this started all because of you and your belief in your friend,” Greydon said. “If you hadn’t pushed for me to investigate this case, the wrong person would have been punished for Phineas’ murder.”
“Well, I thank you for believing in me.”
Greydon leaned closer to her until their faces were just inches apart. “No matter what happens to us in the future, every day we are together is the greatest day of my life. I will always love you.”
Enid could feel his warm breath on her lips and she could stand it no longer. She went to her tiptoes and kissed him. His lips parted and he kissed her back, mouth warm and firm against hers. It was a moment that she never wanted to end. For it felt as if her soul had just taken its first breath.
A deep clearing of a throat came from next to them and they jumped apart.
Malcolm was standing a short distance back with a disapproving look on his face. “I said you two could talk, not kiss.”
“Do not be such a prude, Brother,” Enid chided.
Her brother frowned. “Dare I hope that you two are engaged or do I need to challenge Greydon to a duel… again?”
Enid exchanged a look with Greydon before saying, “We are to be married.”
Malcolm’s expression slipped slightly. “That is a relief. I didn’t really want a reason to shoot Greydon.”
Greydon chuckled. “I was not worried since I have seen you shoot.”
“When is to be the wedding?” Malcolm asked. “Please say that you are not eloping again.”
Enid shook her head. “I want to do it right this time and post the banns, assuming Greydon has no objections.”
“Just tell me when and where and I will be there, my love,” Greydon said.
Enid laughed. “I do hope you will always be this agreeable in our marriage.”
