Enid’s eyes snapped up. “You know I am.”

“Then you must stop all this nonsense about trying to help Lady Eugenie,” Brentwood urged, compassion in his voice.

“Am I to just abandon Lady Eugenie in her time of need?” Enid asked.

Brentwood cast a look to Greydon, indicating that he could use some help.

Greydon had two options. He could go on as he had been and continue to be at odds with Lady Enid or he could help ease her conscience by offering to help Lady Eugenie- the woman that he believed killed his brother. A murderer.

But as he studied Lady Enid, he could see the raw, unflinching anguish on her face. She was not good at hiding her emotions, causing him to feel even more conflicted. Could he walk away and not help Lady Enid? He cared for her, and swallowing his pride seemed like a small thing compared to seeing her bright smile again.

Before he knew what he was about, he said, “If you would like, I can go speak to Lady Eugenie and see if there is any validity to her claims.”

A line between Enid’s brow appeared. “But you already think she is guilty,” she said. “What good would that do?”

“I am willing to go into the meeting with an open mind.” He smirked. “Need I remind you that I am a skilled investigator?”

“Why would you do such a thing?” Enid asked, her eyes searching his.

Greydon held her gaze as he said, “For you, I would do anything.” It was the truth. It was complicated, but it was the truth. Lady Enid was so beautifully charming and full of life that it took his breath from his lungs.

An adorable blush came to Enid’s cheeks. “That is kind of you to say,” she said, lowering her gaze.

Brentwood cleared his throat. “Yes, that was rather kind, and completely out of character for you,” he remarked.

As his words left his mouth, Lady Brentwood approached them and came to a stop near her husband. “I have come to extend Lord Rushcliffe an invitation to dine with us this evening,” she said. “My mother-in-law was rather insistent on you coming, my lord.”

Greydon tipped his head. “I would be honored.”

Lady Brentwood smiled. “Wonderful.”

He turned his attention back towards Lady Enid. “I will seek out Mr. Moore before we dine this evening and I hope I will have something to report.”

“Thank you,” Lady Enid said with a brief smile.

Brentwood interjected, “Allow me to walk you to the door.”

“That isn’t necessary…” he attempted.

“I insist,” Brentwood said, gesturing towards the townhouse. “After you.”

Greydon bowed. “Ladies,” he said before he started walking towards the townhouse.

Brentwood matched his stride and lowered his voice. “Do you have designs on my sister?” he asked.

“No, I do not,” Greydon said.

“I don’t believe you.”

“It is true,” he asserted. “Marriage is the farthest thing from my mind at the moment.”

“Then why are you so eager to help my sister?” Brentwood pressed.

A footman opened the door to the townhouse and Greydon stepped inside. He couldn’t explain his reasonings to Brentwood or else the man would see right through him. Brentwood would know that he had developed deep feelings for Enid, and that was something he just couldn’t abide.

“I merely want justice for my brother,” Greydon said as they walked through the corridor.

“But you don’t believe Lady Eugenie is innocent.”
