“What would you have me do?” Greydon asked. “Turn my back on the woman that I love?”

“You love her?”

Greydon bobbed his head. “I do.”

“Then you must fight for her,” Lord Roswell said.

“That is what I am trying to do, but it is proving to be a difficult task.”

“Try harder.”

Greydon huffed. “You are useless,” he said. “Why do I even bother to listen to you?”

“Because you recognize my genius.”

“That is most assuredly not it.”

“The love master knows all,” Lord Roswell said.

With a glance heavenward, Greydon responded, “You are an idiot.”

Lord Roswell accepted a drink from the server before he took a sip. “Perhaps Brentwood will have some insights on this.”

“I hope not.”

Lord Brentwood’s voice came from behind him. “What insight are you looking for?’

Greydon pressed his lips together. Could this morning get any worse? Why couldn’t his friends see that he just wanted to be left alone with his own thoughts?

Lord Roswell rested his glass on the armchair. “Rushcliffe is asking for some advice on love and he has come to the love master.”

“That is the furthest thing from the truth,” Greydon said.

Brentwood came around the chair and sat next to Rushcliffe. “I assume this is about my sister, and I must say, it is about time.”

Greydon resisted the urge to groan. Did everyone know how much Enid meant to him?

Brentwood continued. “Have you offered for her yet?”

Lord Roswell spoke up. “He did, but she turned him down.”

“That doesn’t surprise me,” Malcolm said. “Enid is fighting demons from her past, and she is struggling to find a new path.”

“Greydon just needs to be patient, but constant in his affection,” Lord Roswell said. “Enid must know that his intentions are honorable.”

Brentwood nodded. “I concur.”

A smug look came to Lord Roswell’s face. “It is a shame that more people do not seek out my advice, especially on matters of the heart. I am hardly ever wrong.”

“You are a jackanapes,” Greydon muttered.

Lord Roswell brought a hand up to his chest. “You wound me, sir.”

“I doubt that,” he said, rising. “If you gentlemen will excuse me, I have had just about enough of you two.”

“But I only just got here,” Brentwood pointed out.

“And that is all I can handle of you,” Greydon responded. “I am taking Enid on a carriage ride this morning.”
