“It won’t be.”

“How can you be so sure?” Greydon asked.

Enid held his gaze and said, “I have great confidence in your investigative skills, my lord.”

Before Greydon could reply, the butler stepped back into the entry hall and announced, “Lady Charlotte will see you now.”

Greydon put his hand out, indicating she should go first. Enid headed towards the door where the butler was standing and stepped inside. She saw the thin-faced Lady Charlotte was sitting on a settee and her blonde hair was tied into a loose chignon at the base of her neck.

Lady Charlotte jumped up from her seat. “You have received word from my sister?” she rushed out.

“We did,” Greydon replied. “Lady Eugenie is doing the best that she can in Newgate.”

“How is it that you were able to see her and not her own sister?” Lady Charlotte asked with a slight pout of her lips.

Greydon came to stop next to Enid. “I accompanied Mr. Moore to see your sister,” he explained.

“Are you a barrister, as well?” Lady Charlotte asked.

“No, but I just want to ensure that the truth comes out,” Greydon said.

“But you are the brother of the person that my sister is claimed to have murdered,” Lady Charlotte pressed.

“I am, but I just want justice for my brother, nothing more, nothing less,” Greydon responded.

Lady Charlotte shifted her gaze to Enid. “Do you vouch for him?” she asked.

Enid bobbed her head. “I do. Lord Rushcliffe is the most honorable man that I know, and you can trust him.”

“Very well,” Lady Charlotte muttered as she dropped back down onto the settee. “Thank you for coming.”

“Before we go, I was hoping to ask you a few questions,” Greydon said.

Lady Charlotte looked at him skeptically. “What kind of questions?”

“Your sister was arrested when she went to my brother’s apartment to look for you and she found him dead,” Greydon said. “Were you with him earlier?”

Lady Charlotte’s eyes grew defiant. “How dare you accuse me of such a thing!” she exclaimed. “I am not a harlot.”

Enid came to sit down next to Lady Charlotte on the settee. “We are not accusing you of anything. We are just trying to ascertain the truth.” She paused. “Please. It is very important that you tell us everything about that morning.”

The young lady bit her lower lip. “I was with Lord Rushcliffe but I left before my sister arrived.”

Greydon stepped closer. “In what condition was Lord Rushcliffe when you left?”

“He was asleep,” Lady Charlotte replied with a wave of her hand. “I left as soon as the dawn broke.”

“We found a letter that was addressed to you that we suspect my brother was writing to you,” Greydon said.

Lady Charlotte smiled. “Phineas always wrote me notes. That was just one of the many reasons that I loved him.”

“You loved him?” Enid asked.

She placed a hand on her belly. “I do,” she replied. “I just don’t believe my sister would have killed him.”

Enid glanced down at the hand covering Lady Charlotte’s stomach before asking, “How far along are you?”

Lady Charlotte removed her hand quickly. “I don’t know what you are referring to,” she said firmly.
