With a glance at her, Greydon revealed, “I discovered something rather interesting today. It appears that my brother wanted to petition Parliament for a divorce.”
Enid came to a stop on the path and turned to face him. “Whyever for?”
He cleared his throat. “He claims that the marriage wasn’t consummated, but his wife refutes that claim.”
“It begs the question, which one is lying?”
“I had that same thought, but Harriet was rather convincing, especially since my brother never missed an opportunity to be with a woman.”
Enid furrowed her brows. “So it might have been entirely possible for Lady Charlotte to marry your brother, assuming Parliament granted him the divorce.”
“Yes, but Harriet said she convinced Phineas to drop that whole matter of divorce.”
“What if Harriet murdered Phineas because he wouldn’t drop the divorce?” Enid asked.
Greydon nodded. “I thought of that, as well. However, Harriet claims that she has never been to Phineas’ apartment before.”
“Do you believe her?”
“I want to believe her, but I still intend to make some inquiries.”
Enid gave him a curious look. “How do you intend to do that?”
“My sister-in-law is a beautiful young woman with black hair,” he replied. “I have no doubt that someone would have noticed her- or her coach- if she went to that part of Town.”
“Oh, I see,” Enid murmured as she lowered her gaze to the lapels of his grey jacket. She felt a twinge of jealousy that he found his sister-in-law to be a beautiful woman. Why did that upset her so? She had no claim on him so he could do as he pleased.
Greydon studied her for a moment before asking, “Did I upset you, Enid?”
She brought her gaze back up. “Of course not,” she responded. “I was just merely pondering on what you said.”
“What did you conclude?”
“About what?” she asked.
His eyes held amusement as he replied, “You said you were pondering on what I said about Harriet.”
“I did say that, didn’t I?”
“You did.”
“Well, I concluded that you were right. Surely someone would have noticed her at the apartment.”
“I’m glad that we could come to an agreement about that.”
Enid pressed her lips together before saying, “It is a good thing that your sister-in-law is so beautiful that she garners attention.”
Greydon’s lips quirked into a boyish grin. “You aren’t by chance jealous of Harriet?”
“No, no, no…” she started. How many times could she deny it before he would believe her? “I am just merely repeating what you said.”
He took a step closer to her. “I want to make something clear, my dear.” He leaned closer until their faces were only inches apart. “Every time I look at you, I fall in love with you all over again.”
“You love me?” she asked, her heart taking flight.
“I thought it was fairly obvious.”
Her eyes roamed over his face until they landed on his lips. She wanted to kiss him, to feel his lips on hers, but was she bold enough to do so?
