“I know,” she murmured, getting up and walking away.
Those two words chilled me to the bone.

“Doesthatfeelgood?”Vince panted, a bead of sweat falling from his forehead. It took every ounce of self-control not to grimace and rub my now burning eye. "I’m gonna come, are you?" He grunted, the pace of his hips picking up.
“Yea.”
Really though? I'd never had an orgasm from sex. His thrusts jerked erratically, thankfully indicating the entire ordeal was nearly over. Squeezing my eyes shut, I debated faking it to please him since the last time I actually came had been ages ago by my own fingers.
But with my eyes closed, the image of someone else materialized: dirty blond hair whipped back, a low moan breaking from his lips in ecstasy. That sound echoed through me, striking desire deep in my core. His mouth crashing into mine, the heady smoky-spicy scent of him surrounding me-
With a grunt Vince pulled out and spilled cum on my stomach while my shameful fantasy disintegrated. It wasn’t realistic. It wasn’t in the cards.Hewasn’t in the cards.
After smearing a towel over my belly, Vince propped up on an elbow and gave me a grin that stirred the churning vat of acid inside my stomach again. This was the worst part- the part I dreaded more than the act itself. I wriggled free, donned an oversized t-shirt and darted into the bathroom.
“Doll?”
I couldn’t do it. Not that. I couldn’t handle him smothering me in kisses and fantasizing about how many kids we’d have and where he wanted to move after college-
A vortex opened to swallow me whole.
“I’m just gonna shower,” I called, locking the door.
The knob jiggled. “Let me join you.”
A command wrapped in a sickly sweet film. Goosebumps crawled up my bare legs. The knob jiggled again. The sound bounced off the dank tile already steaming from how hot I cranked the water.
“Doll, let me in. Now.”
Pulse pounding, I stepped beneath the scalding stream and scrubbed a loofah over my skin until it was pink and raw. A loud bang on the door made me jump, slipping on suds- I landed hard on my ass and yelped.
“Let me in, you ungrateful little brat!”
My throat constricted, the loofah tight in my fist. All because I skipped the step he cherished the most. I prayed he’d get sick of it, but he'd gotten clingier and clingier with every passing week. Between my busy schedule, ruthless dance classes, and spending time with Hannah, I didn’t have the energy to coddle him. He wanted me to dote on him while he ranted about his pre-med classes, and how I was so absent. How I wasn’t trying hard enough. How I wasn’t with him enough. How we needed to focus on our future together. But the future wasn’t a fantasy to me; it was a conglomerate of snippets overlapping and meshing into a tragic play. No part of this future he painted rang true and it never would.
On the floor of the shower, I pulled my knees to my chest, a milky fog descending over my eyes. The vision sucked me under like a riptide while pounding and cursing alternated with apologies. I surrendered to the true future, allowing it to transport me away from my current hell.
He sits at the edge of a dock. Moonlight reflects off lapping water, the weather worn wood groaning under my steps. He doesn’t stir. My fingers brush his shoulder. His face lifts, eyes glowing like liquified silver and in his lap a little book is splayed. Red letters scrawl like computer code across the pages.
I look into Ollie’s eyes again.
They drip tears of blood.
Heaving a gasp, I scrambled up and shut off the water. More and more, short glimpses of him tore me from reality. I wished I could sink back into the vision or be anywhere other than my cramped dorm bathroom, avoiding the wrath of my boyfriend.
But I couldn't hide forever.
I wrapped a towel tightly around myself, hand hovering over the knob. After a few deep breaths, I shoved the door open. Vince leaned against the bedroom door, blocking my path, mouth a slashed line in his face while his finger tapped and tapped and tapped-
“What the hell was that?” He hissed through his teeth. My soaking wet hair dripped down my back, my courage sliding away with it.
“I wanted a shower.”
“No this is you pulling away from me,” he snapped, the vein in his temple pulsing in sync with his tapping finger. “You’re supposed to lay down with me. You’re not allowed to pull away.”
